This study investigated the relationship between mothers' attachment to their own parents and attachment security of their children to them. The subjects were 44 mothers of kindergarten children(age 4-5). Mothers' attachment to their parents was measured by the Adult Attachment Scale by Hazan & Shaver(1992). The security of the chlidren's attachment to their mothers was assessed by Q-set from Waters & Dean(1985). The result of this study are as follows; First, the higher the level of mothers' attachment to their own mothers, the higher the level of attachment security of their children to them. Second, the mother's attachment level to their own fathers as a child tended to contribute the children's attachment security, but did not show significant difference statistically. Where the mothers' attachment to their both parents was poor, the attachment security of their children was low. However, in case that mothers had at least one good attachment relationship with either their fathers or their mothers, present attachment security of their children was high. Consequently, these results indicated that mothers' attachment to their own mothers was more important than their attachment to their fathers for children's attachment security and these attachment relationships could be transmitted to next generation. And the results suggested that if mothers' attachment to their own mothers was low but the attachment level to their own fathers was high, fathers could play a supplementary role. That is, supplementary role of fathers could prevent mothers' insecurity attachment to their own mothers from being transmitted to the present children's attachment to them. From these, finding suggest that the role of father, as a means of halting an intergenerational vicious cycle of insecure attachment relationship, could be important factor.
