Since '88 Seoul Olympics, our economy has rapidly grown with the industries structured complicated, multi-layered and diversified. Meanwhile, our industries have also been restructured to the cause of their globalization, while number of vehicles and labor costs continue to increases. The result is increasing logistics cost, which acts as additional financial burden for local businesses. Being aware of such a situation, local businesses have undertaken or invested in various researches to reengineer their logistics, and they are now adopting the concept of "management of supply chains" expanded from the conventional logistic management and thereby, are making efforts to analyze and eradicate the causes of logistic cost. The role of logistics is to deliver the products or services to the place on time as the customer desires and thereby, maintain their inherent validity. In this vein, this study was aimed at discussing how the logistics cost can be affected by the "cross-docking system"designed to facilitate the delivery of products or services from manufacturer through wholesaler to retailer as well as the information sharing between them. To this end, a manufacture producing disposable tissues, diaper and hygienic band was sampled to be subject to a case study designed to review the logistics flows from factories through regional outlet bases to representatives. As a result, it was found that the cross-docking system could help to reduce the transportation cost from factories to regional bases by approximately 11.5%. As the sample manufacturer was operating the cross-docking system for two centers between bases and representatives, it was attempted to estimate the minimum inventory level in reference to the principle of "Maister Square Root Law". As a consequence, it was estimated that the number of factories and bases where inventory should be kept could be reduced by 53% from 3 factories and 6 bases to only three. In all, it was discovered through this study that although the transportation cost between factory and base remain almost same, the ratio of idling vehicles can be minimized by the "cross-docking" system to save the transportation cost, and that the number of bases keeping the inventory or the amount of inventory calculated by the principle of "Maister Square Root Law" could be reduced by the "cross-docking" system between bases and representatives. Since this study sampled only a single manufacturer, it is hoped that future studies would sample more subjects to analyze the effect of the "cross-docking system" on logistics cost saving more precisely in terms of inventory changes after "cross-docking" between bases and representatives.
