The purpose of this study is to clarify the philosophy of Nokmun IM Song-Ju(鹿門,任聖周, 1711-1788) under one of the main Neo-Confucian philosophical views: "Principle is one but its manifestations are marty(理一分殊, li-i-fen-shu)" In this study, it will be clarified that Nolanun's idea on 'li-i-fen-shu' was based on the assumptions of 'principle and vital force working equally in real(理氣同實)' and 'the coincidence of mind and nature(心性一致)', and that contributed to synthesize and settle the problems raised by Ho-Rak Controversy(湖洛論爭) and to establish the theory for the realization of Confucian moralprinciple.
The philosophy of Nokmun has been understood in the context of the latter between the general categories of ‘Li(principle)-centered theory(主理)' and 'Ch'i(vital force)-entered theory'. It is true that this way of study on the philosophy of Nokmun has contributed to disclose his philosophical characteristics as a Korean Neo-Confucianist. However, it cannot also denied that it has worked as an obstacle to understand Nokmun's philosophy objectively and to interpret it in terms of the consecutive philosophical issues seen in the history of Korean Neo-Confucianism. This dissertation shows that Nokmun's philosophical thought should be understood in terms of' 'li-i-fen-shu(理一分殊)' started from 'Cheng brothers and Chu Hsi(程朱)' and succeeded in Korean Neo-Confucianism.
When articulating his philosophical concerns, Nokmun considered first one of the major premisses of Neo-confucianism--'Li(理) and Ch'i(氣) are reciprocally related to other in non-segregated condition(理氣元不相離)'. In other words, he did not agree to his contemporary's usual understanding on the relationship of Li and Ch'i--"Li as metaphysical and Ch'i as physical," and maintained his unique perspective onit under a mysteriously working Tao(道), that is, 'Li and Ch'i are reciprocally related to other in non-segregated condition.' Therefore, when explaining the relations of Li and Ch'i, he did not regard the concept--'non-segregated condition(不相離)'--as diversity of its manifestations(分殊), and ‘non-mixtures condition(不相離)' as 'the one origin(一原)', but he tried to understand Li and Ch'i in the views of the two propositions derived from 'the one origin' or diversity of its manifestations(分殊), or both of them. Hence Nokmun' theory of Li and Ch'i should not be considered as 'Ch'i-moist(唯氣論: Neoconfucian materialism)' or 'Ch'i vital force-centered theory(主氣論)'.
Nokmun argued that the characteristics of actual world as an unity came not only from the Unity(-) of Li but also h m the Unity(-) of Ch'i. Therefore he insisted that we should assume the diversity of its manifestations(分殊) of Li as well as the diversity of its manifestations(分殊) of Ch'i.
As we saw, "Unity of Li and diversity of its manifestations" is the synthetic proposition to explain of the main theme of the theory of Li and Ch'i. It is the logic of the cosmology and the theory of the human nature in Neo-Confucianism, and the logic of interpretation about the nature and co-relation of unity and particularity of the world, and the logic of the penetration to the theories of nature and value, moreover the way to realize benevolence(仁), the source of human ethic.
To understand "Unity of Li and diversity of its manifestations", Nokmun raised the question on Ho-Rak debater(湖洛論者)'s way of argument to put a sharp distinction between Li as one and diversity of its manifestations(分殊), and to regard the former as unity and the latter as particularity.
Nolanun's theory of mind and nature(心性論)' is formulated by the idea--"Unity of Li and diversity of its manifestations", which is based on the idea--'principle and vital force working equally in real(理氣同實)'. When we see Li as the good and Ch'i as the evil(理善氣惡), the human beings made by Ch'i can not be escaped from the possibility of falling into the evil and does not have the pure good nature(性善) in origin. Therefore, in order to make the theory of the pure good name effective in this concrete world, we must accept the pure good nature of Chi as much the original goodness of Li. This idea appears clearly when Nokmun told that the human nature('性) IS 'Li with 'the physical quality(氣質)' and that it is illogical to regard 'the human nature' as Li. Accordingly, Nokmun argued that the notions of 'the nature of physical quality(氣質之性)' and 'the nature of natural instincts(本然之性)' are merely arisen from the two different views regarding the nature(性) of a thing. Hence he insists that 'the nature of physical quality' is just as 'the nature of natural instincts' in fact. In this context, he argued that there are cifferences between the human nature and Animal nature(人物性相異). He thought that the resemblances or the differences of the nature are caused by 'the nature of physical quality'
Nokmun thought that, in realizing Sainthood, the ideal of Confucianism, it is essential to know how to actualize Li by Ch'i as much as to know Li as the resource of the good. Based on this idea, he insists the concurrence of the mind and the nature. He thought that the mind is the subject of the cognition as the act is same as the nature as moral. In this context, Nokmun found the possibility of the ordinary man to become a Saint and claimed 'the original sameness of the Sage and the ordinary(聖凡一致).' In short, he maintained that everyone can be a Sage with his own effort because he has 'vacuous spirituality and consciousness(虛靈知覺)' and 'brilliant virtue(明德)'. For Nokmun, the Ch'i, which has Li as the original goodness, is understood as the 'Ch'i possessing the purity and genuineness(湛一淸虛之氣).' Therefore, there is no place that 'the purity and genuine of Ch'i' is not non-exist(無所不在) and the good can be universally actualized. That is so called 'the unaroused state of the mind as pure goodness
From "Principle is me but its manifestations are many(理一分殊)", based on 'the Marvelous way principle and material force work together(理氣同實)' and 'the theory of coincidence mind and nature(心性一致)', Nokmoon explained the origin of the evil in the phenomenal world. He denied the theoretical form of Li as the good and Ch'i as the good and the evil, and he explained the evil is caused not by Ch'i but by the remnants of physical quality(氣質), and explained the issue of the mental training(修養) for overcoming the remnants. Through this theory of the mental training(修養論) he tried to solve the logical contradiction, that is, Li as the unrealized principle and Ch'i as the realization not to follow the principle come into being when Li as the principle and Ch'i as the realization are separated.
Now, the significance of Nokmoon's philosophy in the history of Neo-Confucianism of Chosun follows. At first, it is a new horizon of the theory of Li-Ch'i by the suggestion of 'principle and vital force working equally in real (理氣同實)' and 'the theory of coincidence mind and nature(心性一致)'. By 'the Marvelous way principle and material force work together', it means to establish the balanced thought of the theory of Li-Ch'i, for adding the same valuation of Ch'i, actual thing and actual practice to the ideal thinking Li traditionally as the central.
Secondly, it is that the concept of the nature(性), understood as ideal in the past, can be understood as the concept of the universal reality.
Thirdly, it is that settled the problem of the universal and particulars in Neo-Confucianism of Chosun, that is to say, actually problems of Ho-Rak Controversy(湖洛論爭).
At last, it is that completed the exposition of the theory of Li-Ch'i about "Principle is one but its manifestations are many(理一分殊)" in Neo-Confucianism of Chosun. To conclude, as Principle is one but its manifestations are many(理一分殊) and 'Unity of Ch'i and diversity of its manifestations(氣一分殊)', based on 'principle and vital force working equally in real(理氣同實)', are suggested together, he denied the discordance of Li and Ch'i explained only as Unity of Ch'i and diversity of its manifestations, and established the principle of it and the possibility and the basis of the realization of the principle.
