The purpose of this study is to review any relationships between strategy and structure for multinational corporation in view of Stopford & Wells model and to purpose the desirable direction to corporation trying a multinational corporations for improvements by a case study.
This paper combines set of strategy-structure paradigm, the basic structures for various strategies being, national subsidiaries structure, International Business Division structure and worldwide product division structure. Second, the case of matrix organizational structure of Samsung is deeply studied by the conceptual flow from corporate environment, corporate strategy, organizational structure, operational features and proposals for improvement.
Major findings of this paper are as follows;
1. At the beginning, Samsung limitedly took part in export using export division belonging to their electronic business division.
2. Until the late 1980s, Samsung was frequently separated in doing responsible activity between manufacturing and sales and integrated those field again to reinforce the export ability of international business Head-Quarter.
3. In early 1993, Samsung attempted to change their international business structure in order to cope with economics of sale in foreign region since their foreign investment and 2 number of regional head-quarters are both increased.
4. Matrix system of Samsung differed from that Stopford & Wells Model deals. Here the difference is that Samsung extended international division directly to Global Matrix without implementing worldwide product division and area division not like other multinational corporations.
5. Samsung tends to use an international business division to extend their foreign business before they adopt regional Head-Quarter System.
