The aims of this study were first to list up the evergreen broad-leaved trees of the Korean Peninsula and analyze the relationship between geographical factors(altitude, latitude, longitude)and biodiversity; secondly, to delineate the northern and southern limits of evergreen broad-leaved trees, thirdly, to understand the relationship between climatic factors and distribution of evergreen broad-leaved trees ; fourth, to reconstruct time-spatial distribution of evergreen broad-leaved trees of the geological periods in the Korean Peninsula in connection with climatic factors; and finally, to analyze the relationship between the distribution of Daphniphyllum macropodum at Mt, Naejang Natonal Park and climatic factors by the use of tree-ring analysis. For this study, the present distribution maps of evergreen broad-leaved trees were prepared based upon the various flora reports. The past distribution range was reconstructed by micro fossil and macro fossil data. The climatic maps were prepared by the regression formula which were induced by the multiple regression analysis of spsswin 8.0 program. For the multiple regression analysis in dependent values employed, latitude and longitude of 68 meteorological stations in the Korean Peninsula including 55 meteorological stations from the South Korea and 13 meteorological stations from the North Korea. Dependent values include January mean temperature, January mean minimum temperature, August mean temperature, August mean maximum temperature, annual mean temperature and annual range. The tree-ring analysis was employed for the better understanding of relationship between the growth of Daphniphyllum macropodum and climatic factors in Mt. Naejang National Park. There are 131 species of evergreen broad-leaved trees(belonging to 60 genera) occurring in the Koran Peninsula. The distributional range of each species was quite different, although overlapped. The distribution patterns of evergreen broad-leaved trees were categorized into seven groups on the basis of the number of distributing sites, distributional altitude and latitude. One of seven group, the cold-loving evergreen broad-leaved trees were predominant at group1, group2 and Empetrum nigrun var, japonicum, Diapensia lapponica subsp. obovata of group3, but warmth-loving evergreen broad-leaved trees were rich at group3(except for Empetrum nigrun var japonicum, Diapensia laponica subsp. obovata), group4, group5 and group6. The northern distributional limit of warmth-loving evergreen broad-leaved trees included Is. Bakryung, Is. Daechung, Is. Sochung, Is. Pung, Is, Sungbong, Is. Sukmo, Mt, Nam, Mt. Dobong, Mt. Soorak, Mt. Chunma, Mt, Samak , Is. Ulreung, Is. Dok. The southern distributional limit of cold-loving evergreen broad-leaved trees included Mt. Chiri, Mt. Chiak, Mt. Bangtae, Mt. Odae, Mt. Teabaik, Mt, Doota, Is, Ulreung, Is Cheju. The vertical distribution pattern of each group was quite different. The lower limit of distributional elevation in the group 1 and group 2 decreased as one moves toward South. The upper limit of distributional elevation in the group3, group4 and group5 decreased with increasing latitude. However, There was no clear tendency in the group 6 and group 7. Evergreen broad-leaved trees of each group respond differently to the climatic factors. The warmth-loving evergreen broad-leaved trees appear to show close relationship with the January mean temperature -4℃ and January mean minimum temperature -8℃ than others. On the other hand , The cold-loving evergreen broad-leaved trees seem to respond well to the August mean temperature 19℃ and August mean maximum temperature 26℃ than others. Twelve evergreen broad-leaved genera occurred in the Korean Peninsula during the geological periods. The presence of those in the Oligocene at up to Bongsan, which is four degrees north of their present distributional limits implies that the climate of the Oligocene was warmer than that of today. Their presence of evergreen broad-leaved trees in Miocene at up to Kokowon which is 7°30′farther north of their present distributional limits indicates that the climate of the Miocene was the warmest during the recent geological periods. There was no special tendency in the distribution of evergreen broad-leaves trees of the Pleistocene and the Holocene Daphniphyllurm macropodum was belonging to group4 and presented the northern distributional limit. The northern distributional limit of Daphniphyllum macropodum included Is. Guje, Is. Hong, Is. DaeHeakSan, Is. Ulreung, Is Anmyun, Mt. Naejan, The altitudial distribution limit of the Daphniphyllum macropodum decreased with increasing latitude. The distribution of Daphniphyllum macropodum showed close relationship with the January mean temperature -1℃, January mean minimum temperature -6℃ and annual mean temperature 12℃ than others. In the Mt. Naejang National Park, Daphniphyllum macropodum occurs mainly in valleys, such as Keumsun valley and Wonjuc valley, and northern slopes. The vertical distributional limit of Daphniphyllum macropodum is up to 620m on Sinsunbang of Mt. Naejang National Park and seems to related to the January mean temperature -4.5℃ and the January mean minimum temperature -6.8℃. The result of tree-ring analysis showed that the grouth of Daphniphyllum macropodum under the similar thermal condition appears to relate the September precipitation, July precipitation and July mean temperature(Sig = 1.65). The growth of Daphniphllum macropodum showed the negative correlation with September precipitation and the positive correlation with July precipitation. The result of tree-ring analysis indicates that the growth of Daphniphllyum macropodum was sensitive to moisture condition.
