The purpose of this study was to find out the effects of story making activity through wordless picture books on young children's language abilities. The questions of this study were set up as follows: 1. Does story making activity through wordless picture books improve young children's vocabulary? 2. Does story making activity through wordless picture books improve young children's language-understanding ability? 3. Does story making activity through wordless picture books improve young children's story-composing ability? Fifty-two, five and six-year old children who were attending J kindergarten in Kwang-Ju participated for this study. They were randomly assigned to two groups: an experimental group (26 children) and a control group (26 children). Experimental group made stories through wordless picture books, and control group listened to the stories. Experimental treatments were given two times every week during 6 weeks. Language Understanding·Cognition Test(1994) was used to test young children's language differences. Picture Vocabulary Test(1995) was used to investigate young children's vocabulary, and Sentence-Understanding Test(1996) was used to investigate young children's language understanding ability. Then, the analysis was executed on the basis of the analysis instrument of Chae, Jong Ok(1996) to analyze the qualitative level of the story. Also, the data were analyzed by t-test, using the SAS program. The results of this study were as follows: The language abilities of children who made stories through wordless picture books were significantly higher than those of children who listened to the story by teacher. First, it was revealed that there were significant differences on young children's vocabulary between the experimental group and the control group. In other words, the vocabulary of children who made stories through wordless picture books was significantly higher than that of children who listened to the story by teacher. Second, it was revealed that there were significant differences on young children's language-understanding ability between the experimental group and the control group. In other words, the language- understanding ability of children who made stories through wordless picture books was significantly higher than that of children who listened to the story by teacher. Third, it was revealed that there were significant differences on young children's story-composing ability between the experimental group and the control group. In other words, the story-composing ability of children who made stories through wordless picture books was significantly higher than that of children who listened to the story by teacher. It can be concluded from the experimental treatment of this study that story making activity through wordless picture books is more effective than story listening by teacher for the development of young children's language proficiency.
