The presence of ammonia in nature or industrial waste waters has become a major environmental problem. Several technologies were proposed based on different chemical-physical principles such as air stripping, biological denitrification, selective ion exchange and chlorination. The purposes of this thesis were to determine characteristics of factors effecting on ammonia stripping and to present the feasibility of a centrifugal stripping device for ammonia removal.
The first experiment was undertaken to determine effects of factors such as pH, temperature, alkalinity, aeration rate and air-flow rate for ammonia stripping. The results showed that the removal rate constant of ammonia-nitrogen was increased with increasing pH and increasing temperature at the higher alkalinity. However, at the lower alkalinity, the removal rate constant at even high pH was dropped with time because pH was decreased during stripping time. The effect of alkalinity on removal rate constant if alkalinity was sufficiently high(e.g. 5,000 CaCO3 mg/L) was not found. The effects of air-flow rate and aeration rate showed that a higher air-flow rate and aeration rate resulted in higher removal rate constant.
The second experiment was performed to present the possibility of centrifugal stripping device as a new stripping system. results showed that removal rate constant was increased with increasing pH and increasing rpm. With all rpms studied in this experiment, the removal efficiency was greater than 70% after 2h of treatment.
