The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of walking speed and step length on the parameters of gait and the angle of lower limbs joint which are the kinematic variables, and also the ground reaction force and the joint moment which are the kinetic variables.
The subjects were 10 undergraduate and graduate students in their 20s. All subjects were men with normal legs who had no kind of case history regarding legs. The subjects were individually tested by the running timer at three levels of walking speed; slow(0.76m/s), normal(1.34m/s), and fast(2.46m/s). At each speed level the step length was regulated to -10% of normal, normal, and +10% of normal step length using foot print. The walking performances of each subjects were filmed using a high speed video camera and the ground reaction force was measured by 600Hz sampling frequency. The raw data were analyzed by LabVIEW Graphical Program and these data were analyzed by ANOVAs and Scheffe´.
The results of this study were as follows:
1. Among the parameters of gait, the change in walking speed and step length both showed effect on cadence and stance time. Cadence increased and stance time decreased when walking speed increased, and cadence decreased and stance time increased when step length increased.
2. As the walking speed increased, the maximum plantar flexion and the range of motion of the ankle joint increased, and the maximum flexion and the range of motion of the knee and hip joint increased as well.
As the step length increased, the maximum dorsiflexion, the maximum plantar flexion, and the range of motion of the ankle joint increased. The maximum flexion, maximum extension, and the range of motion of the hip joint increased as well.
3. The vertical component of ground reaction force increased at the point of Fz1 and Fz3 but decreased at the point of Fz2 as the walking speed increased. The antero-posterior component of ground reaction force increased at the point of Fy1 and Fy3 as the walking speed increased.
The vertical ground reaction force at the point of Fz1 increased as the step length increased in normal and fast walking speed respectively, but at the point of Fz2 the vertical ground reaction force decreased. The antero-posterior component of ground reaction force increased at the point of Fy1 and Fy3 as the step length increased.
4. The related time to Tz1 appeared rapidly as the walking speed increased, and the time to Tz3 appeared late. Among the antero-posterior component only Tz2 appeared quickly as the walking speed increased.
As the step length increased, the related time to Tz1 appeared quickly. The related time to Ty1 quickened only in the fast walking speed as step length increased.
5. The maximum plantar flexion and the dorsiflexion moment of the ankle joint increased, and the maximum of the first extension moment, flexion moment, and the maximum of the second extension moment also increased as the walking speed increased. In the case of hip joint, the maximum extension and flexion moment increased as the walking speed increased.
The maximum dorsiflexion moment of the ankle joint increased as the step length increased only at the fast walking speed. Although there wasn't significant difference shown in the plantar flexion moment, regular pattern in the plantar flexion moment which increased as the step length increased was found. The first maximum extension moment of the knee joint increased only at the normal walking speed, but there appeared no significant difference in the maximum flexion and second extension moment. The maximum extension moment of the hip joint increased at the normal and fast walking speed. Although there wasn't significant difference, regular pattern in flexion moment which increased as the step length increased was found.
