This paper evaluates whether financial market development influences economic growth. In the cross-section analysis using the world bank data, Summers & Heston, and Barro & Lee data, I find that bank development is positively associated with 80's growth and improvement in TFP, whereas the stock market turnover is positively associated with 90's growth and improvement in TFP. Meanwhile, the volume of stock market trade is positively associated with both 80's and 90's capital accumulations. In the panel analysis, I pay attention to the significance of the time fixed effect of 90's. The results indicate that stock market turnover makes important contribution to growth, and that the volume of trade in the stock market seems important for capital accumulation. This paper conducts a empirical test of Greenwood & Jovanovic's model(1990). It was found that in the context of Greenwood & Jovanovic, stock market matters but the bank does not. Also, this paper analyses the impact of financial development on growth for non-OECD countries. The results indicate that the bank may be more important than the stock market for the developed economies but, the stock market may be more important than the bank for the undeveloped economies.
