For the period before the 2008 Global Financial Crisis, numerous studies assessing the relationship between financial market development and economic growth are available for developed countries. Yet, similar economic analysis is limited from 2008 and onwards as well as for emerging economies. Therefore, this study aims to examine the effect of financial market development on economic growth for the period before and after the Global Financial Crisis. In addition, such effect will be analyzed for both the developed and emerging economies. Thus, panel data from 1988-2014 were collected from 49 countries (i.e., 30 OECD member countries, 9 Asian emerging economies and other Asian countries with relevant data) for this study. Furthermore, financial markets are divided into direct and indirect financial markets. Market capitalization and turnover ratio over the listed stocks are used as proxies to indicate the degree of direct financial markets, and domestic credit to private sector by banks is used as proxy variable for indirect financial markets. The results of the empirical analyses can be summarized in three key points. When information for all 49 countries are used as pooled data, the results show that both direct financial market developments (DFMD) and indirect financial market developments (IDFMD) have positive impacts on economic growths for all 49 countries. When data are analyzed separately, the results for Asian emerging economies are similar to those of the polled data despite the indirect being more influential than the direct. In OECD countries, however, only DFMD affect positively the economic growth of OECD countries. Finally, DFMD results in improving the appropriateness of economic growth in the case of Asian emerging economies. This result also implies that DFMD is important for economic growth.
