It is essential to generate accurate intertidal DEM for estimating geomorphologic change quantitatively in tidal flat. In order to estimate the quantitative geomorphologic change in the tidal flat of Gomso Bay, Korea, I generated the intertidal DEMs using waterline method for 1991 and 2000, respectively. The accuracy of resulting DEM from the waterline method largely depends on how precisely the waterline is extracted from the given images and how accurately absolute elevation is assigned to each waterline. The reflectance of each band turns out greatly various because of the amount of suspended sediments and soil moisture contents according to the tidal condition. I suggest that the band selection should be different based upon tide condition: in flood tide, waterlines extracted from TM band 4 and TM band 5 are close each other, but TM band 4 should be more effective in ebb tide. This phenomenon results from the high soil moisture content and remaining water in sediment structures such as sand ripple and mud patch, and can be defined by "Effective Exposed Area". A simple density slicing method using TM NDVI is good enough to extract waterline in flood tide, but I propose to apply a more effective and reliable neural network classification method using four bands(TM band 4, 5, 6 and NDVI) in ebb tide. I successfully generated intertidal DEM'2000 with rms error of 10.9 cm and DEM'91 from the waterlines and absolute elevations measured by in-situ leveling. The geomorphologic change estimated by subtracting the two DEMs shows: the east of Juj in-chun, mean sedimentation rate of 2.1 cm/9-years corresponding to mean geomorphologic change of 34,120 m3/year; the west of Juj in-chun, mean erosion rate of -11.0 cm/9-years corresponding to mean erosion budget of -250,994 m3/year. Discrimination of sand and mud by remote sensing is not easy task to achieve in tidal flat. However, this classification is very valuable and important for studies on coastal sedimentation process and geomorphologic change. As a preliminary stage for surface sediment classification, we have studied correlations between field data(grain size and soil moisture content) and various satellite data. Correlation coefficients between optical satellite data and the volume percent of bigger than medium sand size(> 0.25 mm) are 0.7 1(Landsat TM band 5) and 0.78(EOS AM-1 ASTER SWIR band 7), respectively. These imply that it is important to set up the criterion of grain size for surface sediment classification using satellite data. Correlation coefficients between soil moisture content and satellite data are lower than those between grain size and satellite data, and RADARSAT standard mode has the highest correlation coefficient among the analysis. However, it is not conclusive because the in-situ samples were not all obtained simultaneously with satellite observation.
