Since the later half of the '90s the number of users of the internet service have explosively increased, and the traffic demanded per user has also been gradually increasing into a larger band. Both the access and backbone nets for users also are rapidly undergoing expansion into larger bands and further sophistication. In contrast the MAN section which connects business and backbone nets has relatively been neglected and thus has been regarded as a bottleneck of traffic in the overall network. In the present study it is intended to bring forth a best solution to an economical and reliable next generation ethernet MAN by performing throughput tests at the time of allocating a band per link and a breadth of the band per port on some critical equipments available on the market thesedays. These tests were performed at Layer 2 and Layer 3 in order to confirm the Rate Limit functions, the most characteristic of what a metro ethernet has, along with the cap ability of each item of the device. As a result of the tests it was confirmed that in building up an access device between access rings, or from an access ring to a user' s terminal, or in building up a device between core rings, or between a core and an access, none of the three makers' products caused a problem at all, individually or in group, and even in the Rate Limit functions, too. The results have been generally satisfactory, even if there were much difference occurring between the devices in the way of electric transmission design, and constructions of switch fabric and backplane. To improve the Rate Limit functions even more, it is considered desirable that betterment of fabric and other interms of H/ W and complement of an algorithm for curtailment of sampling intervals be made in advance. It seems too much, however, to repeat as many as four times the test with the cap acity of the devices at the time of allocating the band breadth per port, and so in actual services it is deemed necessary to determine a standard for errors for each device through various repeated throu ghput tests with each band breadth and packet, so that the standard can be taken into consideration in allocation of band breadth to users.
