The object of this assignment is to observe the movement of the upper body during a baseball's straight-ball pitches. It is compared and observed by its three-dimensional kinematic analysis, and the process of straight-ball is explained biomechanically to suggest the most suitable of pitching motion. The targets of this assignment are the five main members of university baseball teams, whom are apparently right-handed pitches. To analyse their pitching mothion, an image data, called Arial Performance Analysis System(APAS), produces the value of coordinates, then finally the data is analysed by LabVIEW 6i. The time required for pitching motion are mainly for wind-up and stride, which give the figure of 83.29%, and is followed by cocking, acceleration, deceleration, and follow-through, 16.71%. Here are the results of kinematic factors that affect the change of upper body motion during the straigh-ball pitches. Once again this results are analysed by three-dimensional kinematic datas. 1. TIME The time required for pitching motion are mainly for wind-up and stride, which give the figure of 83.29% of the complete pitching motion, and is followed by cocking, acceleration, deceleration, and follow-through, 16.71%. Obviously preparation takes much longer than the actual cocking. This is because it becomes more effective for lagging back. 2. SPEED It is confirmed that the linear velocity is greater on the left-right side the movement, that is, Y-Direction than on forward-backward or upward-downward movement, those are X/ Z-Directions. Resultant linear velocity reaches the maximum speed in the phase of cocking in sequence of shoulder joint, elbow joint, wrist joint and hand, after gradually increasing in the phase of wind-up and stride. In the later phases, however, the velocity reduces rapidly. In other words, it has shown that motion type sequentially varies from proximal segment to distal segment. The maximum speed of proximal segment's connected to distal segment in a whipping motion. 3. Angle In order to send the ball farther at the point of release, the angel movement of the upper body has a tendency of tilting forward to perform the action in the state of internal rotation. At the point of release, the angle movement of shoulder-joint makes a small flexion before having external rotation. On the other hand, elbow joint, after having the full extension, makes a release with flexions in progress. After the point of release, the elbow joint shows extension again with minimum flexion being under way. Also, the length of shoulder girdle is greater than that of pelvis girdle. It is simply because upper limbs' distal segment rotates wider than lower limb's proximal segment.
