The purpose of this study is to examine the living types and process of changes through an analysis of Seoul citizens' living style, so as to find out the direction and way of a flexible housing as an alternative for future housings. This study is done also to suggest the way of transformation and utilization that is proper to various forms and standards, by using of traditional door or windows as its concrete flexible element. A family lifecycle means a continuity of time in every step of one's solitude, marriage, childbirth, upbringing, and declining years that are experienced by family life. As people's main demands change in each term of the cycle, they tend to move or alter the houses to meet their current situation. The elements of a family lifecycle which have an influence on these living types are the number of family and household, the age of householder, and the age of children. The element of flexibleness can be defined by these factors as the houses go through the changes. The architectural element which is varied by flexibleness factors is called a flexibleness element which can correspond to the changes of main demands by making use of the number and area of rooms and relations between them. Recently the living type of Seoul citizens has shown that the ratio of families living in an apartment is increasing, while those who live in a private residence is decreasing. When observing a statistics of the number of families and rooms, which are currently used, the number of rooms occupied by family members are increasing as time goes by. Looking into the relationship between the number of family members and the house area, a good deal of families are living in a house of 20∼30 pyong, therefore the apartments that meets the users' preferences and demands in these types of house should be continuously researched and developed. Speaking of a concern between the number of family and generation of the family, the ratio of one person family or one generation per house has been increasing, two generations per one house decreasing, three generations per house has varied little, and families of more than five persons that live in apartments is declining in a big way. Examining the connection between the age of householders and the family composition, there is a tendency of living alone until the age of 30, two generations living together from 30 to 70, one generation from 70 to 75, living alone after that, and three generation in one house appear mostly around age of 35 to 54. Researching the changes in a way of living style in terms of a family lifecycle, usually a child tends to sleep together with his parents when an infant. A private room is given when a child, but have an organic relationship with the public spaces for education and play such as a living room or a kitchen. In case there are two children, they are each given a roon at certain point and when they grow up as an adolescent, they occupy a room which provides them their privacy, so the importance of its position and privacy is predictable. Generalizing the results of this research, the residents in an apartment and rooms used are increasing, and the family composition is becoming diverse. Considering the unstable house area, however, the development of flexible apartment, which can be adapted to the way of many family compositions and lives in a limited unit area, is needed. The number and area of rooms and relations between rooms can be controlled by flexible elements, as the family lifecycle and main demands change. Reflecting the increase of occupied rooms and considering that a family cycle is not so much effected by the change of house area, a method that is able to adjust the number of rooms and relations between them could be a formation of rooms into types like fusion, interference, and independent in the form of partitions. This method can be separated into a fixed and free type in a degree of easiness of flexibleness. By applying these flexible elements, an apartment accommodating the changes of family cycle can be planned. The turning point of room composition is the time when an infant becomes a child and an adult who needs his own private room, and an ideal room composition proper to the family lifecycle can be designed with flexibleness at this point. As one of the methods to compose the partitions in an flexible apartment, the elements of traditional door and windows are applicable. Moreover, a wide variety of living spaces can be highly expected by making best use of a way of flexibleness by those materials and systems of opening or shutting.
