The purpose of this research is to reinterpret the meaning of free play from a reconceptualistic, in particular post-modern perspective by analyzing children's recognition of free play and teachers instruction methods. The research studied the free play of 5 year-olds. The research pursued the following research questions. 1. How do young children recognize free play? 2. What are the instruction methods teachers use during young children's free play? 2-1. What are the instruction methods teachers use during young children's free play? 2-2. In what form does teachers interference appear during young children's free play? The research studied 5-year olds in A childcare center (40 children in the Sora Class) and B childcare center (23 children in the Sarang Class) both located in Seoul. The research was conducted for 2 months between August 20, 2001 and October 26, 2001. Cultural description methods such as participant observation, in-depth interview, descriptive observation and documentation (weekly education plans, individual student records) were used to collect data. To record the collected information, participant observation logs, video recordings, in-depth interview logs were maintained. The logs were analyzed through qualitative research such as analysis of major cases and encoding analysis by theme. The findings of this research are the following. 1. The young children were found to distinguish between free play and non-free play. The factors distinguished by young children as free play were doing what they wished, doing what was fun, doing what had less cognitive tension but allowed physical freedom and doing what they could actively participate in. On the other hand, the factors the young children distinguished as not being free play were doing what they must, doing what was not fun, doing what presented cognitive tension and also was physically demanding and doing what they could gain information from by passively participating in. 2. The instruction method for free play appeared to be different between the teachers of the two childcare centers depending on how they regarded free play. The teacher at A childcare center recognized free play time as an opportunity for the children to express their own thoughts and therefore said that the role of the teacher was to closely observe their play and to support their development and field of interest. The teacher at B childcare center recognized free play time as a process for the children to make things with their own thoughts and therefore said that the teachers role was to be a playmate, stimulator and material provider. On the other hand, the children recognized free play to be a time when they can select what they like to play with. They also pointed out that obstacles to their free selection were the short amount of time and limited space for free play. The children at the childcare centers wanted diverse spaces and wanted to enjoy their free play at a space other than their classrooms. In addition, they wanted the free play space to have no rules or restrictions. The children were feeling that the teachers interference during free play appeared much when frequent play plans, rules for aggressive play and rules to be followed in the classroom were created. These frequent play plans and classroom rule-making appeared to be factors preventing the true free play among young children. The following conclusions can be reached from the above-mentioned results. 1. Young children were found to distinguish free play from what was not free play. Freedom, choice and amusement were elements found to have much influence on whether young children recognized activities as free play. 2. When free play was allowed for just a short amount of time, young children were found to feel that the activity was not free play. This could be seen as a result of the children's recognition of free play being influenced by teachers planning. Therefore, there is a need for teachers to break free from fixed free play hours and to reconfigure the length of free play time together with the young children. 3. The young children attending full-day programs at childcare centers were found to feel an activity was freer when they were allowed to play in a variety of spaces. On the other hand, when restricted to a certain space, these young children felt the supervision and interference by the teacher were stronger. 4. The young children were feeling that frequent play planning, rule-making and play control by teachers were forms of interference. In such situations, the children were found to enjoy the restricted activities in hidden spaces to avoid teacher intervention and were found to consider such activities to be free play. As seen above, young children were found to clearly recognize free play. How the teacher provides guidance during free play time was found to influence young children's free play behavior.
