This paper considers an inspection algorithm, which can be used in PCB(printed circuit board) manufacturing process using SMT(surface mount technology). The inspection algorithm is developed for the parts mounting inspection process. So far, ICT(in-circuit test) electronic parts in PCB have been inspected mostly using ICT which is a contact method. However, according to the increasing complexity of the boards, the ICT method shows its limit and much inspection time is required. Further more, the reliability of inspection is not guaranteed. For these reasons, AOI(automatic optical inspection) techniques are emerging as an alternative, which inspects parts automatically by optical methods. The core part of the AOI technologies is pattern recognition technology which is representative in the vision application field. The existing AOI method using traditional pattern recognition methods has a drawback in a sense that it defects flexibility in case of new parts with feature variation. In this paper, to solve these problems, we propose learning based inspection algorithm which can adapt itself to the variation of similar parts for SMT electric parts in PCB. It eliminates the learning time and guarantees the confidence of inspection results. The variance of the parts is trained based on a statistical learning algorithm. To show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, a series of experiments were performed in a simulated SMD inspection environment with various rectangular chips on PCB boards. The experiment results show that the proposed methods can be applied to real SMD inspection equipment in near future.
