A Series of activated carbon was prepared from coconut shells and coal-tar pitch binder by physical activation with overheated steam in this study. The effect of variable processes such as activation temperature, activation time and ratio of mixing were investigated for optimizing those preparation parameters. The activation processes were carried out continuously. At first, prepared pellets were heated at a rate of 1.5℃/min from the room temperature to 200℃ and maintained for 1 hour to stabilize coal tar pitch. They were heated at a rate of 4℃/min up to a activation temperature(750, 800, 850, 900℃) at nitrogen atmosphere without any carbonization process. Activation was carried out for 30, 60, 90min at each temperature respectively. The nitrogen adsorption isotherms at 77 K on pellet-shaped activated carbons show the same trend of Type I by IUPAC classification. The average pore sizes were about 19-21Å The specific surface areas(SBET) of pellet typed ACs were increased with increasing the activation temperature and time. Specific surface area value of AC treated for 90min at temperature 900℃ was 1082 m2/g. The methylene blue numbers were continuously increased with increasing the activation temperature and time. On the other hand, iodine numbers were highly increased till activation time of 60min, but the rate of increase of iodine numbers were decreased after that time. This indicates that new micropores were created and the existing micropores turn into mesopores and macropores because of increased reactivity of carbon surface and H2O. The iodine value of AC treated for 90min at temperature 900℃ was 1001 mg/g.
