The purpose of this study was to investigate causal relationship between mother's perceived social support, stress, child's temperament and mother's parenting self-efficacy. The subjects of this study were 416 mothers of 5th and 6th grade children in elementary schools located in Seoul. Mother's Parenting Self-Efficacy Scale was developed by the investigator to assess mother's parenting self-efficacy. To assess mother's perceived social support and child's temperament, Social Support Scale developed by Shin(1997) and Revised Dimension of Temperament Survey developed by Lee(1994) were used. Mother's Perceived Family Stress developed by Jin(1994) was revised to assess mother's stress. Means, %, X^(2), Cramer's V, Cronbach's α, Split-half Reliability, factor analysis, Pearson's r, multiple regression, and structural equation model analysis were used for data analyses. In testing all hypothesis,.05 was used as a significance level in this study. The main results are as follows: 1. Five parenting self-efficacy factors - general parenting self-efficacy, health, communication, education, and control - were found from the 37 items developed for this study. 2. Mother's parenting self-efficacy was related positively to mother's perceived social support and child's temperament. On the other hand, mother's parenting self-efficacy was negatively related to mother's stress. 3. Mother's perceived social support was the best predictor for mother's parenting self-efficacy. Child's temperament was the significant predictor for mother's parenting self-efficacy. However, mother's stress contributed less to predict mother's parenting self-efficacy. 4. Mother's stress had an indirect effect on mother's parenting self-efficacy mediated by mother's perceived social support. Child's temperament had both direct and indirect effects on mother's parenting self-efficacy mediated by mother's perceived social support.
