Retaining walls with reinforced earth have been constructed around the world. The use of reinforced earth is a recent development in the design and construction of earth-retaining structure. It is believed that reinforced retaining wall has some advantages for which construction is quite simple basically. It will take short construction time relatively, cimparing to such as reinforced-concrete retaining wall. In addition, low price and easy construction respectively will be a good attractive point for the interests in practical point of view. In this study, the first of all, the existing ways of technical design and analysis have been compared and re-evaluated extensively. None of these methods takes block-toblock effcts into account in the jprocess of being design and analysis. Lots of facing is a precast concrete panel. In this type of retaining wall, block-to-block connection strength and its frictional effects play an important role to stabilize the reinforced wall against the failure. Considering this, the facing blocks are not just portecting unit but it can be regarded as a structural unit. Therefore facing block should be reflected to the stability analysis of reinforced retaining walls. From this point of view, the facing has been examined into details on this study. Moreover five sites field-test monitoring data for lateral pressures on geogrid-reinforced retaining wall have been compiled and evaluated. Induced tensile stresses and strains on the reinforcements have been also examined while retaining walls undergo lateral pressures. Horizontal displacements on the facing have been carefully monitored for each condition that has been given. Conclusions so far archived are as follows: 1. The stability is significantly affected by the distribution of lateral earth pressure applying to the wall as it was well known to us. Shape of failure, allowable safety factor(F.S.all) and installed angle of reinforcements at failure surface, tect. are of great importance on the wall stabilityl It has been reviewed that those design methods in use now absolutely depend upon above important factors. Each of design methods reflects on different results how to accept that. Especially, lateral pressure distribution and failure shape have great effect upon the wall stability and the economical effciency. 2. Facing block's connection strength and its frictional effects are evaluated under given conditions. (1) Junction strength undergoes various influences-the type of installed shear-key, developed shear strength on geogrid, such as reinforcement, and its tensile strength etc. (2) Frictional strength of the facing blocks relies exclusively on the types of shear key, say, anchor-type or pin-type. Especially pined-type shear key has rather the beneficial effects than the others. (3) Judging by the magnitude of lateral pressure measured on the facing block, based on laboratory and in situ test results, is smaller than computed lateral pressure. Therefore, it can be concluded that design methods in use now are quite conservative so that the facing block is safe enough with those methods. 3. Field test instruments installed at trial test site in order to measure distribution of lateral pressure on the wall, induced tensile strains and stresses of the reinforcements, horizontal displacements of the facing wall. These data have been compiled and analyzed elaborately. (1) Horizontal displacements is maximal in the middle of wall or nearly two third from the bottom of the wall. It has shown that measured displacements are less than that of 3% of allowable displacement, the reinforced retaining wall. Test wall was constructed by a current design method now in use. From this point of view, current design methods become conservative design. (2) Induced tensile strains in the reinforcements define out of all relation with the height of the wall and the distance from the facing wall to the place where the reinforement are installed. Tensile stresses are uniformly distributed along with the reinforcements, longitudinally. Maximum tensile strains, measured from each site, do not reach to 5% of the allowable strain of the geogrid. It can also imply that design methods in use now are quite conservative. (3) Induced tensile force to the max. comes up to about 56% of long-term allowable strength of the reinforcements. Likewise induced tensile strain does, it can be also believed that design methods now in use are conservative. 4. After observation of several geogrid-reinforced retaining walls, this study would suggest a lateral pressure envelope, applicable to the design of gewgrid-reinforced retaining walls. It seems to be used for technical design hereafter. To design geogrid-reinforced retaining walls, we should estimate the earth pressure to which the reinforced earth structure will be subjected. In contrast to RC retaining walls, as we can see, geogrid-reinforced retaining walls show a different type of wall yielding so that the lateral earth pressure is different to that obtained by Rankines theory or Coulombs theory. These lateral pressure distributions are close to a trapezoid. In other words, the shpaes of the lateral earth pressure distribution on the wall are not consistent with that one, increased linearly with depth. It is believable that gewgrid reinforcing effects and wall flexibility cause this shape. The actual lateral pressure distribution is a function of the construction sequence and the relative flexibility of the wall. Geogrid-reinforced retaining wall is a kind of flexible wall. Geogrid improves the tensile strength of soil mass, substantially. It seems that stress redistribution cuases a trapezoid shape. In fact, soil-reinforcement interaction brings into the stress-transition, which is related to the stress redistribution. 5. Field and laboratory observations have never hsown that the distinct failure surface might be closer to an arc of a logarithmic spiral or Rankines active failure surface. Strain and stress measurements were made was uniform along with the layers of geogrid. As a boundary line between active zone and passive zone, the potential failure surface in the reinforced soil mass can be obtained by joining points on the geogrid layers at which peak strain or stress occurred, from bottom to ground surface. However, measurements made an indistinct observation. Therefore potential failure surface should be taken as Rankines active failure line conservatively. That leads an angle of 45+φ/2 with the horizontal. More elaborate study will be required for this. 6. In most case, design procedure now in use for the design of reinforced earth retaining walls is in the interest of a granular backfill soil having a unit weight r and a internal friction angle of φ. If there will be a cohesive soil expected inevitably, current design methods are no longer valid. More study should undertake this in future.
