The author of this paper intended to apply the music therapy of positive auditory stimulation and thereby to examine the effects of music on the weight, vital signs, and behavioral states of premature infants. The research design was non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design, and the subjects of research were selected from the premature infants hospitalized at the NICU of K General Hospital in Seoul. 20 premature infants, who were considered appropriate as the subjects by the selection standards, were divided into 10 infants of experimental group and 10 infants of control group by means of matching. The data were collected during the period of August 1 through October 27, 2001. The 10 infants of experimental group were made to hear the CDs composed of heart beat sounds and traditional soothing nursery rhymes and lullaby of Korea. The infants in the incubators were made to hear the music for 25 minutes every day in 14 days at the average level of 56 dB. Their weight was measured once in a day at the designated time, and their vital signs and behavioral states were checked before and after the treatment for the collection of data. For the behavioral states, those evaluation tools were employed, which were developed by Anderson et al.(1990) and later rearranged by Kim, Hee-sook(1996). The collected data went through the statistical analysis with the SPSS program, and Mann-Whitney U verifications were used for the tests of hypotheses. The findings of research are as follows: First, in the Hypothesis 1: 'The weight of the experimental group with the application of music would increase more than that of the control group without the said application,' the weight increase did not show statistically any significant difference, but with the larger weight increases of the experimental group than that of the control group. From the 11th day and thereafter of the experimentations, the average weight of the experimental group overtook that of the control group, the latter having been originally larger than the former. Second, in the Hypothesis 2: 'The vital signs of the experimental group with the application of music would be more stabilized than those of the control group without the said application,' no statistically significant difference was found. The experimental group, however, showed more stability than the control group on the average. Third, in the Hypothesis 3: 'The behavioral states of the experimental group with the application of music would change more positively than those of the control group without the said application,' no significant difference was detected either. In the case of any changes in behavioral states, however, the experimental group indicated almost positive changes on the average. According to the results of the experimentations, the hypotheses were not supported by the statistical significance. With the application of music therapy, however, the experimental group showed the higher level of weight increase and the stability in vital signs, which implied that music played a favorable role in the growth of premature infants. In the future, the researches should be conducted with the applications to a larger number of the subjects, and the long-term studies with a variety of research methods would be required. At the same time, their applications in clinic should be studied in depth as well.
