This article describes tragic indication methods contained in novels of Yeon-am, Park Ji-won while focusing on characters, backgrounds and events. As a general term that can be shown in various literary works including novels, the term "tragic" arises from existence recognition of individuals who strive to overcome ceaseless conflicts, confusions and confrontations. Up to now, most studies for Yeon-am have dealt with his Confucian or equability ideas, sentence styles, satirical and humorous characteristics included in his novels, or his practical science concepts. Unlike these existing studies, this article focuses on tragic characteristics contained Yeon-am's novels. Before describing the tragic characteristics, this article discusses the backgrounds and reasons on which the creation of his novels is based. Especially, his unfortunate and tragic life can be regarded as one of these backgrounds and reasons along with confusions derived from the late transition period of Chosun. Using characters in his novels, Yeon-am represented his anger and discouragement that he felt in confused environments changing to individualism society. To explain tragic indication methods included in Yeon-am's novels, this article classifies characters, backgrounds and events according to their characteristics. First, to define tragic indication of characters, characters in each novel are divided into various types; frustration abandonment type, criticism resistance type, contemplation type, progressive woman type, and tragic situation provider type. Secondly, to illustrate tragic situations of backgrounds, backgrounds in each novel are divided into various situations; conflicts caused by social status limitation, frustration of economic troubles, confrontation between political contradiction and individual desires, and confusion of social values. Yeon-am's novels were written during the confused transition period for which people started to realize them as a rational existence. Therefore, tragic situations occur while characters in his novels try to cope with these confusions of a transition period. Thirdly, in these tragic situations, characters in his novels show various attitudes such as frustration, abandonment, resistance and contemplation, so they have different results. As tragic events, these results are divided into various styles; death (the peak of a tragic event), disappearance, discord with other persons, discord with other people, and escape from the world. Yeon-am's novels have been regarded as satirical and humorous literature. But this article analyzes attitudes that characters in his novels show under tragic situations and focuses on each result caused by their behaviors in order to reflect his consciousness that interprets social situations of the late period of Chosun as a tragedy. Yeon-am tried to show several conflicts he felt during a confused transition period through his novels. In this process, his tragic indication methods were used to represent characters, backgrounds and events. Because this article focuses on contents of Yeon-am's novels to explain tragic indication methods, tragic characteristics contained in other classical novels have not been compared and discussed sufficiently. Therefore, in relation to tragic indication methods of Yeon-am's novels, tragic characteristics represented by various literary works including other classical novels should be studied in future, while considering periodical situations in the 18th century.
