Every work of art is made up of organic and inorganic substances which are blended together, however, these paintings age as the time progresses and also by their natural surroundings. Despite all the factors, the main cause of such damages is found to be the UV rays which become the primary problem of paintings' exhibition and preservation. This thesis will show the discoloration of oil colors by UV rays, which is proved by the experiment that even with a short exposure to UV rays cause some discoloration on twenty colors including 'ultramarine blue' and 'permanent yellow' but not big color differences in 'zinc white' and 'cobalt violet'. According to this experiment, it has shown that the direct effect of the UV rays to paintings' discoloration, and also suggests that the infrared rays, X rays, and gamma rays may cause the damages to paintings as well. Especially, modern cultural life expects better indoor activities which are followed by the development of more diverse and advanced lighting apparatus systems thereupon the light becomes the major source of discoloration. The paintings' exhibition is made possible by lights' irradiation, however it is inevitable for paintings to be damaged by lighting systems. Additional research is in need to minimize such damages and also to display appropriate lightings in exhibition such as regular measurements of adequate irradiation and scientific investigation of illumination. This thesis only mentions UV rays among the effects of light, however further research is needed to examine the general effect of light on paintings.
