The purpose of this study was to investigate the bacteria count on the tongue surface and dental plaque areas of the tooth surface as a clinical study before and after using the specifically developed ultrasonic water spray toothbrush(25,000 Hz) in adults without periodontal disease. Dental plaque areas were examined by TBI Analyzer. In order to dislodge the bacterial attachment in vitro, experiment was done with hydroxyapatite bead and Streptococcus mutans(S. mutans) JC-2. The following results were obtained : 1. In the effect of removal of S. mutans JC-2 attached to he hydroxyapatite beads, dislodgment the colony forming unit(CFU) were proportionally increasing with sonicating(25,000 Hz, 5W) time 5 seconds(41.7×10^(4) CFU/ml), 10s(51.7×10^(4) CFU/ml), 30s(83.3×10^(4) CFU/ml), 60s(90.3×10^(4) CFU/ml). In 20s, 30s, 60s, there is a significant difference before and after using(P<0.05). 2. In ultrasonic wave of 25,000Hz, 50W for 5s, 20s, 30s, CFU/ml is 167.3×10^(4), 70.7×10^(4), 64.7×10^(4), respectively. Only using for 10s is significant difference(P<0.05). 3. Bacteria culture analysis of dorsal tongue surface, there is a significant decrease of cultured bacterial count in the group of ultrasonic water spray tooth brush and manual toothbrush(P<0.05). There is a significant decrease the cultured bacterial count in the group of ultrasonic water spray tooth brush(P<0.01). 4. There is no significant difference in dental plaque analysis on the each tooth surface. But generally it is significant decreasing percentage in dental plaque size as 96.7%(P<0.001). Hence, we conclude that ultrasonic water spray toothbrush might be effective in decrease the oral microorganisms and dental plaque.
