The purpose of this thesis is to clarify the relationship between the variation of infants' home environment and their linguistic abilities. To this end, two research questions have been set up in this study. Research Question 1. What specific relations are found between infants' linguistic abilities and their home environment? And how are different with gender and age? Research Question 2. What factors among the home environmental variation factors influence on the infants' linguistic abilities? And how are different with gender and age? The subjects of this study were 180 male and female 4-6 year old preschool-infants who attend the private kindergartens located at Kwangju, and their mothers. And the number of the research subjects was 360 in total. The research tools used in this research were the home environment stimulus test and the linguistic ability test. The purpose of the home environment stimulus test was to examine the infants' home environments, and that of the linguistic ability test was to examine the infants' linguistic abilities,' the latter test was developed by Ju, Young-Hee(1982). The main study was conducted after finishing the preliminary research which was for the purpose of knowing the appropriateness of those tools, the exact time taken for the whole test process, the tacts of conducting the tests, and the expected reactions of early childhood. A questionnaire was conducted with the home environment stimulus test, and the subjects of this questionnaire were 190 mothers of 4-6 children of A kindergarten, and 180 copies were analyzed in the actual study, except for insincerely answered copies. And the linguistic ability test was conducted on 180 4-6 year old children of A kindergarten in total. The actual test was implemented by the research worker, in the teacher's room inside the kindergarten that was a familiar place for children. It took 40-50 minutes to interview each child. With respect to data analysis, the Research Question 1 used the Correlation Analysis, the Research Question 2 used the Regression Analysis, the Research Question 3 used both the Correlation Analysis and the Regression Analysis, and the Research Question 4 used the Regression Analysis, respectively, They were verified within the 95% significance level of reliance. And SPSS win 9.0 program was used in its statistical analysis and treatment. The findings of this study are as follows: 1. The relationship between infants' linguistic abilities and their home environments' variation was constant. The correlation between the total point of the home background and the total point of infants' linguistic abilities showed .531(p.<0.1), and this is a high-leveled correlation. The interrelation between the lower variation of infants' home environments and the lower conditions of infants' linguistic abilities also showed a very significant correlation. The variation in young children's home environment that significantly make us predict their linguistic abilities was the extent of satisfying their wants and avoiding the restrictions against them and the emotional atmosphere. As for the interrelation between infants' home environment and their linguistic abilities, by the gender, the items that showed the highest interrelation were 'peaceful family life' and 'their capacity of analyzing the language', in case of male, on the other hand in case of female children, they were 'the family environment that can stimulate their mental capacity' and 'the deductive power through the language', Therefore, the gender considerably influenced upon the interrelation between infants' family backgrounds and their linguistic abilities.
