(Parenting Stress ...

The purpose of this research is to analyze parental parenting stress and children's daily stress, and to examine the relationship between parental parenting stress and children's daily stress.
For this purpose, the research questions were set up as follows:
1. How are the general trends of parental parenting stress?
2. Does the degree of parental parenting stress differ or depend upon variables such as a child's gender, age, the presence of siblings, or the age of the parent?
3. How are the general trends of children's daily stress?
4. Does the degree of a child's daily stress differ or depend upon variables such as gender, age, the presence of siblings, or the parents employment status?
5. How is the relationship between parental parenting stress and children's daily stress?
The research population for this study includes 142 children (76 aged five years and 66 aged four years) who attend a private kindergarten in Seoul, Special City, Korea. The parents of these 142 subjects also participated in this study. A modified and Korean translated Parenting Stress Index: PSI (1994, Park, Hae Mee & 1997, Lee, Hyun Jeong) originally developed by Abidin (1983) which was further modified for the purposes of this study from 82 to 80 questions was used to evaluate parental parenting stress. The Korean Preschool Daily Stress Scale: KPDSS (1998, Yum, Hyun Kyung) was used to evaluate children's daily stress.
The findings of the study can be summarized as follows :
1. When evaluating parental parenting stress, the degree of mother's stress was significantly higher than the fathers and there seemed to be some significant positive correlations among sub-factors that contributed to parenting stress. Likewise, parenting stress for parents of male children was significantly higher than those parents who reared female children, parents of five year olds versus those parents with children aged four showed higher parenting stress levels, employed mothers revealed higher parenting stress levels than mothers who were not employed, and parents with more than one child also showed higher parenting stress levels than did parents of an only child.
2. Upon evaluation of children's daily stress, meaningful correlations also existed between sub-factors and level of stress. And it was noteworthy that male children scored higher stress levels than female children. Children aged five years showed higher stress levels than those aged four, children reared by employed mothers scored higher stress levels than those with unemployed mothers, and children with siblings versus children without siblings showed higher stress levels as well.
3. A positive relationship was also found between parental parenting stress and children's daily stress. Furthermore, mothers showed a closer correlation between parental parenting stress and children's daily stress than did fathers.
