The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between children's friendship and their mothers' management strategies for children's friendship.
The subjects were 488 1st and 4th grade children and their mothers. Mothers' management strategies were measured by Parental Involvement Checklist(Cohen, 1989). Friendship quality and friendship network were assessed by Friendship Quality Scale(Rhee & Koh, 1999) and the lists of class members. The data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, ANOVAs, and correlations.
The results of this study were as follows:
First, mothers' management strategies for children's friendship were different according to children's grades. Mothers of the 1st grade children provided more advices, supports and opportunities than those of the 4th graders.
Second, mothers' management strategies for children's friendship were different by gender. Girls' mothers offered more advice and support than boys' mothers.
Third, children's friendship quality and friendship network were different according to children's grades. The 4th grade children reported the positive functions of friendship quality greater than the 1st graders. Also, the 4th grade children had more friends than the 1st graders.
Fourth, children's friendship quality and friendship network were different according to children's gender. Boys reported receiving more trust and felt more competition from friends than girls. On the other hand, girls reported having more friends than boys.
Fifth, mothers' management strategies were related with friendship network of the 1st grade children. The more mothers provided advice and support, the more friends children had. For 4th grade children, mothers' management strategies were related with friendship quality. The more opportunities and monitors mothers provided, the better friendship quality their children had.
Finally, relationships between mothers' management strategies and children's friendship were different by gender. Children tended to have better friendship quality and more friends, if mothers provided girls opportunities more or mothers monitored boys more frequently.
