The characteristics of DeNOx conversion process by plasma/post-heating system with the simulated gas containing three HCs(propene, ethene, propane) are investigated experimentally. NO to NO_(2) conversion by non-thermal plasma treatment plays an important role in removing NO_x from diesel engine exhaust. Addition of hydrocarbons is the most widely used method in the plasma DeNO_x system to promote the NO to NO_(2) conversion with energy saving. This paper shows the results of additional NO-NO_(2) conversion efficiency and consumed HCs concentrations as a function of post-heating temperature(200℃∼500℃) using plasma/post-heating system. Without plasma treatment, NO-NO_(2) conversion occurs at approximately 450℃ in a mixture of N₂/O2 with a trace gas of propene, ethene and increases greatly as temperature increases. In case of propane, NO-NO_(2) conversion occurs at approximately 425℃. The NO can, however, be converted to NO_(2) at lower temperatures by treating the gas mixture with non-thermal plasma. The NO-NO_(2) conversion enhances further by passing the plasma treated gas through the post-heating furnace. In case of propene, ethene and propane, Results show that respectively, 18%∼39%, 20%∼50% and 15%∼30% more conversion of NO to NO_(2) is observed when the temperatures of the post-heating furnace are maintained at 300℃ or 400℃. The additional NO-NO_(2) conversion by post-heating is due to the reaction of HCs with the byproducts or radicals generated from the plasma reaction.
