(The) Problems and solutions that teachers face in the elementary English class : Qualitative interviews on teacher development원문보기

The aim of this study is to know what problems teachers face in English classes in elementary schools' how they deal with those problems, what the teachers do to develop their teaching skills and to understand their difficulties and suggest some solutions. The examiness of this study consist of two groups. One group is five teachers who take exclusive charge of English classes in their elementary schools. The other group is also five teachers who have a regular class and teach English, too. The members of each group were carefully chosen according to their educational careers and English-teaching experience. Every examinee was interviewed twice in a group and twenty times individually (or in a small group) during the fifteen weeks of this study. In group interviews, questions and answers were given naturally and spontaneously. In order to gather data, interviews, recording, phone-calling, and E-mailing were used. There seem to be three big problems that English teachers face in elementary schools. One problem is how to behave as a teacher another is how to deal with diverse English-level students, and the third is how to control and manage the students. To speak English fluently, the teachers should use various educational materials and mass media as well as English-training courses in the private institutes or in workshops for English teachers (if possible). For a well-planned class, the teachers should be interested in using materials to arouse the students' curiosity gradually, introducing diverse games, changing the students' seats, group-study, CDs, Internet materials, and experiencing other teachers' English class. The students' levels of English are differ because of their environmental and personal situations. To prevent learning deficiencies and solve the diverse English levels of the students, pair or group activity and role-dividing in a group have been tried with the assignment of proper activities. The problems involved in managing and controling students are caused by the students' distraction, indifference, and emotional uneasiness. To attract their attention, the teachers provide opportunies to listen to classical or rhythmic music, learning with a student helper, and checking assignments with other students. To help the indifferent students, it is advisable to make the students realize the necessity of learning English or to give them assignments and roles fit to their ability, or different abilities. The teachers should also try to find out and understand the students' peculiar characters and provide an active and open classroom. Based on my study, I'd like to suggest some solutions to the problems that English teachers face in elementary schools. First, Good workshop lecturers and step-by-step workshop plans must be prepared by the government in order that teaching English in elementary schools is much more supported and acknowledge by the parents of the students and the local community. Second, to lessen the various level gaps among the students, the learning amount per class should be greatly reduced, and reconstituted materials and flexible teaching programs should be developed. Third, it is urgent to make and supply proper teaching materials and useful data for the teachers to use with ease in the different level classes.
