Attitudes toward men's appearance management as related to sex role orientation and sensation seeking tendency원문보기

The purpose of this study were 1) to identify gender differences in the attitudes toward men’s appearance management, 2) to identify the effects of sex role orientation and sensation seeking tendency on the attitudes toward men’s appearance management, 3) to identify the effects of sensation seeking tendency on the attitudes toward men’s appearance management in each of four male groups classified by BSRI(Bem’s Sex Role Inventory) 4) to identify the effects of sensation seeking tendency and general clothing attitude on the attitudes toward men’s appearance management in each of four male groups classified by BSRI.
The data were collected from 301 male and 317 female respondents living in Seoul and were analyzed by frequency, factor analysis, χ^(2)-test, t-test, and multiple regression analysis.
The results of this study were as follows:
1) Six dimensions of the attitudes toward men’s appearance management were identified: fashion interest, daily appearance management, clothing selection ability, intensive appearance management, clothing, and halo effect. Three dimensions of general clothing attitude were identified: clothing interest, clothing importance, and individuality.
2) There were significant gender differences in the attitudes toward men’s appearance management. Females showed more positive attitudes toward daily appearance management and clothing selection ability than males did.
3) Masculinity was the most influencing variables of the attitude toward men’s appearance management in male group. Males with higher masculinity showed more positive attitudes toward intensive appearance management, daily appearance management, clothing selection ability, and appearance importance. Sensation seeking tendency influenced the female’s attitudes toward fashion interest, appearance importance, and intensive appearance management in females.
4) Sensation seeking tendency had the effect on six factors of the attitudes toward men’s appearance management only in masculine group of men’s BSRI classifications.
5) Clothing interest had the effect on fashion interest, daily appearance management, clothing selection ability, appearance importance, and clothing halo effect and sensation seeking tendency had the effect on fashion interest, intensive appearance management, and clothing halo effect in masculine group of women’s BSRI classifications.
Clothing importance and individuality were significantly influenced fashion interest, daily appearance management, clothing selection ability, appearance importance, and clothing halo effect in feminine, androgynous, undifferentiated group of women’s BSRI classifications.
