The present study examined the effects of sex discrimination experiences on women's social identity. Many studies on women explained that women are not satisfied with being women and have low expectation on themselves because of negative female stereotypes and discriminations against women. However, there are not enough studies on which specific psychological and behavioral outcome can result from discrimination experiences. In present study, three experiments were performed to study direct effects of discrimination experiences. In experiment 1, the discrimination was manipulated and then the attitude toward self and in-group as a function of discrimination experience was measured. The result showed that Ss who experienced discrimination had low performance perceived control, high collective self-esteem for in-group, and high degree of identification with in-group. Also, regardless of the discrimination, female subjects attributed their failure to discrimination and showed ambivalent attitude toward their in-group. In experiments 2, discrimination was manipulated and then Ss were supposed to evaluate others. As a result, Ss, who were discriminated against, discriminated against others when they had to evaluate others. Furthermore, the discrimination was not limited to the person who discriminated against Ss but generalized to the group where the person belonged. In experiment 3, individual achievements were manipulated in a situation where other in-group members were discriminated against. And it was investigated if individual achievements affect attitude toward in-group and perception of discrimination. When in-group was discriminated against and Ss got positive feedback, they attributed in-group member's failure to discrimination , but they did not identify themselves with their in-group. In short, after experiencing discriminations, women identified themselves with the in-group and enhanced collective self-esteem for their in-group probably as a means of coping with the threat to their social identity. While collective self-esteem for the in-group was high, the attitude toward in-group was ambivalent. When they were discriminated against, they generalized their discrimination to the group where the discriminator belonged. High achievers, in a situation where their in-group was discriminated against, attributed in-group member's failures to discrimination but identified themselves less with the in-group. Finally, the indication and limitation of the present study was discussed and further studies were suggested.
