Surveying Moltmann's mutual interpenetrative Trinitarianism, which made an epochal turning point in studying Trinitarianism of the latter 20th century, this thesis tries to grasp the difference between his theory and the former theory and the meaning of his mutual interpenetrative Trinitarianism.
In Christian history, the Trinitarian dogma has developed to protect church and theology during the debate of early church with heretics. Many people, however, think that Trinitarianism is a dogma of mystery beyond human reason or just a dogma separated from our reality, referring to its speculative peculiarity.
This trend is due to the fact that the Trinitarian dogma has been handed down from the theological tradition of the Western church, where the Trinitarian dogma had been started under the premise that God is only One.
However, Moltmann unfolds his Trinitarian theology from the premise that God is three persons. According to him, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit becomes one through love and intercourse. The power of unlimited love makes it possible. In other words, 'becoming one God' is not a numerical meaning but a unique living feature residing together through God's circular existential method. This is called as 'Moltmann's Trinitarianism of Perichoresis'. Like this, Moltmann's special mutual interpenetrative Trinitarianism led to a revival in modern Trinitarian study and laid a foundation of understanding the trinitarian dogma, which has been considered as a mysterious and speculative dogma.
So what are the contents of his Trinitarianism of perichoresis? What's the concrete concept of perichoresis? What is its starting point? What's the relationship between mutual interpenetrative Trinitarianism and the Kingdom of God? What kind of influence did it have on modern theology? What's the alternative and how can one overcome the criticism that it is Tritheismus? These are the themes that this thesis should deal with.
Before studying Moltmann's Trinity of perichoresis, Chapter II describes Trinitarianism until now in historical debate, Trinitarianism among modern theologians, and Moltmann's viewpoint on it. In history, the Trinitarian dogma was formed in the midst of debate with heretics. The Trinitarian dogma has been developed under the tradition of the Western church, the theology of which had been started under the premise that God is only One. Tertullian who had put a cornerstone of Western Trinitarian theology defined the Trinitarian diagram as 'one substance, three persons'(una substantia tres personae). Karl Barth and Karl Rahner, who represent Protestantism and Roman Catholicism premised one God, following the tradition of the Western church.
In chapter III I consider the Cross of Jesus Christ upon which Moltmann's mutual interpenetrative Trinitarianism is based and the Trinitarian meaning of the event on the Cross. Moltmann regarded the event of Jesus Christ on the Cross as God's. When the Son was in passion and killed, the Father also felt pain and had a passion with the spirit of unlimited love, the Holy Spirit. Therefore the Cross was the Son's suffering and the Father's as well. Thus the Cross of Jesus Christ is the event of the relationship between the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, Trinitarian event.
In Chapter IV I treat the concept of perichoresis and the oneness of the three person God as the kernel of Moltmann's mutual interpenetrative Trinity. Perichoresis indicates the concept of the oneness of three person God and, at the same time, is the concept which means the sociability and intercourse among themselves, establishing the individuality of the three personal God. According to Moltmann, the oneness of the three personal God lies in the mutual interpenetrative life of the three God, in which the Father and the Holy Spirit are with the Son, the Father and the Son with the Holy Spirit, and the Son and the Holy Spirit with the Father. Trinity does not mean that three person God becomes one but that God's peculiar lifestyle that three personal God interpenetrates each other by means of a circular existential style and resides together. That is to say, the oneness of three personal God is in the life of the perichoresis. The perfect power of love makes this possible. Therefore, Moltmann's mutual interpenetrative Trinity premises that God is three person, and then this three person God is described as one in the lifestyle of perichoresis.
Next, in Chapter V, I survey the subject of the praxis of Moltmann's Trinity of perichoresis and try to obtain a theological understanding of the Kingdom through his trinitarian understanding on history and an argument on freedom. Moltmann provides a way which makes it possible to interpret the Trinity socially. Since God has been generally recognized as the Absolute, the God of competency and majesty, he just remained as the object of worship and theology and did not have any real meaning in our life. On the contrary, Moltmann opened new horizons through his Trinitarian theology that God is with us in our life, sociability, service in Christian community, the Eucharist, and baptism.
Finally, in Chapter VI, I examine the influences of Moltmann's Trinitarianism of perichoresis on modern theology, focusing on political theology, feminist theology, and eco-theology. Until now monarchical monotheism has supported monarchical dictatorship by an Emperor and the rule of ecclesiastical authority by a Pope. This endangers various states and communities and is basically different from the sociability and intercourse of the Trinitarian God. Maintaining, thus, the liberation of politics, economy, society, human race, culture, and the natural world, Moltmann unfolded his political theology extensively throughout every sphere of life. Criticizing the problems caused by patriarchal male chauvinistic thought, he emphasizes that Trinitarian sociability is a free sociability and living space where men and women respect each other without rule and suppression. Then, referring to eco-environmental crisis, he criticizes monotheistic theism dividing God and the world and emphasizes Trinitarian mutual interpenetrative theory which mentions God in the world and the world in God.
In conclusion, Moltmann's Trinitarianism of perichoresis understands the oneness of three person not as monotheistic but as Trinitarian oneness. His Trinitarianism expresses God's life, where the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit resides together through deep mutual perichoresis of love and becomes one, interpenetrating each other. His Trinitarianism is not, as some have claimed, tritheism. That claim is due to the influence of the tradition of Western church which has the great premise that God is one. On the other hand, Moltmann's Trinitarianism of perichoresis is orthodox Trinitarianism which is well based upon the history of Jesus Christ and the Bible, and follows Symbolum Nicaeno-Constantinopolitanum, which the Eastern and Western church authorizes. In addition, his mutual interpenetrative Trinitarianism is significant in the sense that it has illuminated Trinitarianism in a practical way. This had been regarded as theoretical and speculative and concretely contributed to political theology, liberation theology, feminist theology, and eco-theology. Furthermore, by regarding the event of Jesus Christ on the cross as that of Trinitarian God, Moltmann made an opportunity to be concerned with the problem of the world and participate in social reality, pain, and suffering, whereas the traditional Trinitarianism has only talked about God.
