The movement to recycle the food waste garbage using earthworms has been under active studies and effort for practical use has also been doing in many areas of the world. While transforming garbage into feed for feeding animals, earthworms are also available for fishing baits, auxiliary healthful stuff and even for material of cosmetics. Excrements of earthworms can be utilized for soil fertilizer, too. Many of the experiments have been carried on, however, mostly done with on-the site experience not with laboratory-based study. Moreover, precise study about the breeding conditions for the recycle of garbage is just a beginning stage. Therefore, in this study, we have examined optimum conditions on growth of earthworms as the fundamental basic data. Under the pretext of practical application at home we have studied the harmfulness of substances (expected to be formed during the process) which might be disturbance materials during treatment of food waste. We have checked the possibility rate of minimizing the garbage using virtual real flowerpots. In many books, it has been reported that the proper water content for earthworms may be around 70 %, however, our repeated virtual experiments have indicated that earthworms are under the most active growth conditions at the water contert of 45 % to 55%. They haven't been raised well under other water. In our study, earthworms have been very sensitive to the salty concentration. Through the experiments of varying the salt concentration, we have concluded that the limit of salt concentration shall be 0.7%. So, for the proper growth of earthworms, it would be desirable to keep the salt concentration not higher than 0.5%. When we fed food waste garbage mixed with casting to earthworms, the growth condition of earthworms tended to be dependent upon the mixture rate. Growth retarded about the 40% of mixture rate, but at the rate of 20%, it was of no harm. We also have tried the toxity using earthworms as for the daily necessities, agricultural chemicals, cigarette butts and heavy metal substances. According to results of the preliminary experiments, it turned out to be helpful to use toilet paper for the bedding material. Among the daily necessities, it was observed that detergent indicated noxious at 1,000∼2,000mg/ℓ, salt at 5,000mg/ℓ. Cigarettes and dry cells proved to be noxious at the lower density. Experiments showed that insecticide might be harmful to earthworms at the density of below 50mg/ℓ, heavy metal substance varies a lot; mercury and cadmium at below 40mg/ℓ, chrome at below 1ppm and lead at below 116mg/ℓ. Therefore, we have concluded that earthworms can be utilized as the standards of measuring the toxicity of harmful substances. Moreover in order to experiment the way of minimizing foodwaste garbage, we have placed earthworms into two-layer and three-layer flowerpots. We have put food waste with paper and checked the possibility of processing. The results of experiments showed that earthworms were quite helpful to reduce the quantity of most home-made food garbage and paper(newspaper and toilet paper). It took three days for side dish(cold noodle) and watermelon peel, ten days for the newspapers; average time for earthworms to eat up food wastes was 4.9 days and the speed of processing about thirteen kinds of wastes was at the rate of 0.204g/d per one earthworm. When food waste(boiled rice) was put in the multiple flowerpots without earthworms, it took long to process and smelled bad. In case earthworms were put into flowerpots, earthworms ate up the garbage with no smell. So we have came to an conclusion that earthworms could be one of useful ways to minimize the foodwaste.
