Kim Seung-Ok is a typical writer of 1960's literature which is remarkably distinguished from that of 1950's its main current is characterized by anti-communist ideology and humanism. Up to this time, most of discussion and researches on Kim Seung-Ok's novels have been focused on his works as a turning-point of 1950's literature into 1960's. The purpose of this study is to find out the essence of Kim Seung-Ok's literature by reviewing the changes in aspects of all his works based on findings of existing researches. Kim Seung-Ok's novels show the characteristics of modernism that the subject uses internal self-consciousness instead of generality based on the reflex of real life, because of materialized and fragmented reality. Internality shown in modernism novels criticizes or incapacitates social modernity through being alienated from external reality or self confinement. The internality shown in Kim Seung-Ok's novels, therefore, can be understood in this view because it is the focus of modernistic trend in literature. But, even modernism novels can not be excluded from the area of literature; reflecting reality and social role. General hostile relations not solved in real life appear in literary works in internal style. Accordingly, this study analyzes the changes in aspects of Kim Seung-Ok's novels and evaluate its social meaning, centering on internal consciousness of characters in his novels. Chapter II in this study shows his early works expressing the process of establishing his "world" and disillusionment about reality. Each character's "own world" in his works such as 「Life Practice」and 「History」 is resulted from a negative cognition about reality established during the political turbulence at that time; post Korean War, 4.19 Revolution, and 5.16 Coup. Vicious vision shown in internal consciousness of characters in 「Heaven」, 「Dreamy Pocketbook」, 「To understand my Sister」 is caused by such a negative "own world" each character has. As a result, it developed into disillusionment about contradictions in real world. Chapter III shows his middle-period works which show fetishism in the process of modernization and human alienation. The process that a person devotes oneself to fetishism during the fast modernization is proved by analyzing his works such as「A Trip to Mujin」,「To Buy In Cheap」, 「A Cup of Tea」, and「A goat is Strong」. Especially, 「A Trip to Mujin」 expresses remarkably person's overturn in a sense of value that capitalistic modernization compels human beings by character's internal consciousness. 「A goat is Strong」 is regarded as a work showing the most critical social consciousness of Kim Seung-Ok's novels. Analysis on his novels, 「Seoul, 1964 Winter」 and 「A Picnic」 proves human alienation a person can experience in enormous industrial society full of fetishism. Chapter IV shows his last-period works with tendency to popular literature from reflecting social conditions. The meaning of his late novels is put in 「Prolificity」, 「The Summer I Stole」, and 「1960's Style」 in that they present specific social aspects at that time.「Night Trip」and 「Chapter O of Seoul Moonlight」are reviewed to prove a problem of his novels related to damaged life and popular tendency. Internal consciousness appearing in Kim's early and mid-period novels grants a significant meaning in the history of literature to his novels as 1960's literature. It is his literary success that he reflects internal consciousness of a person in 1960's society when modernization was developed with negative view about modernistic reality. But, it is regarded as a limitation of his works that his works show only a fragmental reflect of life without imaging a general reality due to the lack of true connection between the subject and the world. This is a fundamental factor to make his late works turn into popular tendency. With this review, it can be said that Kim Seung-Ok's novels have not only a great meaning but also a limit as 1960's literature simultaneously in them.
