1960년대 한국 소설의 탈식민적 양상 연구 : 이호철·최인훈·남정현의 소설을 중심으로 (A) study on post-colonialism aspects of 1960s Korean novels : focusing on Lee Ho-cheol, Choi In-hoon and Nam Jeong-hyun's novels원문보기

This thesis focuses on the post-colonial phases of Lee Ho-cheol, Choi In-hoon and Nam Jeong-hyun’s novels in which were shown in the 1960’s novels. During that decade, the outset of our civilization was closely related to our recent society. At the beginning of 1960’s, new political ways were kept and reinforced by the military takeover of the government that arose on May 16. The revolution that occurred on March 19, inspired by both hope and frustration, fueled the literary background of the 1960’s. During this period, these novels illustrated the contradictions and severe hostility of reality with the post-colonial phases. In spite of ending the official colonial reign from foreigners, post-colonialism started criticizing not only colonization that could not get out of the influence of vestiges of Japanese imperialism and European imperialism but also imperial arguments which continue to maintain and strengthen colonial effect. Post-colonialism ultimately shares the same goals with nationalism. However, post-colonialism is different from past nationalism because post-colonialism intends to be more comprehensive and complicated than nationalism which surpasses anti-foreign ethnocentrism. In order for the national literature to break free from past imperialistic failures, it must deal with more complex and important subjects which should exceed simple anti-foreign campaigns and the praise of national culture. For those reasons, post-colonial theories are not relevant to realism, but consist of magical realism and extinct narrative strategy. In other words, national literature frees itself from its own position and will obtain a higher level view and strategy. As expanded nationalism, Third World post-colonialism could also be resistant post colonialism. Resistant post-colonialism could help to treat internal and external conflicts caused by a new colony without disrupting Third World spaces. Furthermore, post-colonialism is observed to cope with the problems of post-colonial and capitalistic structure in the course of post-colonial campaign against neo-colonialism. Lee Ho-cheol’s novels had been changed from a divided consciousness based on his early experiences to the gradual diffusion of realistic problems. His early novels expressed a life of people who came from North Korea and their adaptation to reality. Since then, his novels described in detail a fragmentary petit bourgeois life and how petit bourgeois lives were changed to fascism by trivialism. He who can grasp important literature-historical linking chains in partitioned recognition arise sympathy that can summarize the partition period by seeking a divided recognition in various life styles of citizens caused by sticking of partition. Thus his never ending reaction to a divided reality, he is able to understand the post colonial phases in depth. Through describing the reality of a divided nation, he clearly illustrates a society of corruption and an emergence of a petit bourgeois. Therefore, the divided recognition in his novels could lead to the post colonialism state of mind. Choi In-hoon’s novels had been changed from crossing a world of reality and beliefs to gradually minimizing reality and maximizing beliefs. He tried to seek for the possibility of resistance and subversion over the imperialism and neo-colonialism, considering the 1960s’ reality to post-colonialism. His novels particularly describe post colonialism with an understanding between differing ideological realities of South and North Korea through imperialistic rule, history of war, but most importantly a constant state of confusion between the two different cultures. The post-colonial concept of his novels is more remarkably formed by discourse and descriptive strategy of experimental form. He brought social problems of the day into relief by an acute point of view about politics. His efforts like this enabled him to represent the postcolonial recognition escaping from the neo-colonial period. Thus, he could realistically hold up a true mirror to the existing repression organization of the colonial age by making a post-colonial descriptive strategy stand. Nam Jeong-hyun’s novels directly display criticism and satire on reality. The grotesque situation shown in his novels is his purpose to disclose a strong satire on reality. He treats specific problems of racial history by characterization, such as conjugal or father and son relationships. Schematized characterization and consistent themes like these were deepened by using satire and allegory which were his literary expertise. Therefore, his works were a huge allegory based on reality criticism. His novels closely examine who had responsibility of partition situation through digging into racial problem. So, his novels continue to provoke the critical mind of post colonialism by attacking a foreign country sharply but bluntly that paved the way to racial tragedy. The 1960s’ novels which the writer’s realistic consciousness was revealed by narrative technique were commonly based on post-colonization against the neo-colonialism. Trivialism, fantastic techniques and realistic portrayal showed basis that one could notice the 1960s’ reality objectively and observe the trend of the times of an intellectual, as well as reveal the vivid outrageousness of the neo-colonial period. Nevertheless, the post-colonization brought the lack of concreteness because of the embellishment of the author’s point of view. Even though these kinds of techniques brought forth the reality caused by denial about the impossibility of making reality reappear, they are limited from viewing the basic contradiction of reality. The society in the 1960’s did not perceive the problems of imperialism and neo-colonialism thoroughly; however the writers represent realistic problems by accepting various techniques. Therefore, the post-colonial aspects shown in 1960s’ novels display various techniques that imply the trend of the times, which have novelistic significance.
