The aim of this study is to implement a group counseling program for school-maladjusted adolescents on the basis of solution-focused brief therapy model(S. de Shazer and Insoo Kim Berg among many others) and to prove that this program is of great use in helping school-maladjusted adolescents find out their own problems, specify what they want, improve their problem-solving ability. To develop this program, first, I surveyed previous studies on the characteristics of school-maladjusted adolescents, the usefulness of group counseling programs, and solution-focused brief therapy. On the basis of the survey results, I developed a six-session group counseling program within the framework of the solution-focused brief therapy and implemented the program to six school-maladjusted students from B High School in Bucheon, which started school social work in cooperation with H Community Center. To obtain valid and objective data, I audio-taped and video-taped the whole process of the program and wrote down all the conversations made during counseling. This study used quantitative and qualitative methods at once; quantitative, in that it takes advantage of questionnaires about school attitude and qualitative, in that it measures psychological changes group members have shown by using observations and evaluations on group members by the worker, co-worker and social worker in charge, self-assessments group members made each session, and pre and posttest. The results of the program we made in this study are summarized as follows. First, when we measure by the qualitative methods the changes that group members, individually and as a whole, have shown, it has been shown that, as the group counseling proceeds, the group members come to be more joyful, to participate more actively in school activities, to get more self-confidence, and to redefine their problems and find the ways to solve them through interpersonal relationship. Second, in terms of self-assessments on the goals group members made for themselves, we can see this they have in common; that is, the evaluation scores, which showed little change until the third session, remarkably increase when it comes to the fourth session and, in the fifth session, they show that all the group members reach the goals they set at the beginning. Third, the questionnaire surveys made before and after the program show that group members' attitudes in school have been improved in all the four domains concerning student behavior-namely, self-confidence in school life, relationship with friends, relationship with teachers, and motivation for school behavior. The surveys also show that all the group members come to have strong motivation for better school behaviour, three of whom have improved their self-confidence. Especially, one of the members, who had great difficulty making a good relationship between friends and teachers, is shown to have greatly improved in each corresponding domain, which means that the members have successfully established problem-solving ability. Forth, the results of pre and posttest taken to teachers in charge show that all the group members come to have more positive attitudes in school behaviour after intervention than they had before intervention. Thus, we conclude that solution-focused group counseling program can provided a very effective approach to help school-maladjusted adolescents better adjust themselves to school environment. The implications of this study are as follows. First, the program implemented in this study contributes to establishing the foundation of field-oriented program development. Second, this study suggests some ways the intervention should be made in the treatment of school-maladjusted adolescents. Not judging maladjusted students on the pathological point of view or just ignoring their problems can lead to the minimization of group members' objection to invention and the maximization of their motivation for better school attitude. Problem-solving tasks help them improve their potentiality and self-confidence. Third, this study proved the high practicability of solution-focused brief therapy model in the school social work field. As maladjusted adolescents is likely to leave school on the form of voluntary leaving, school transfer, absence without leave, or early leaving, prompt intervention is immediately made just after the occurrence of problematic situations or before the situations are worse. Taking into consideration the present situation of school social work with very limited personnel involved, solution-focused brief therapy model would be a good approach to the maladjustment of school adolescents in that it takes effect even in a short term. Last, this study suggests a form of school-oriented integrated service to maladjusted adolescents. Considering school as the center for solving various problems maladjusted adolescents might have, the close cooperations between schools and community Center make it possible for social workers to intervene the interaction of school, teachers and students, to provide service of mediation, and thus to maximize the influences of the intervention.
