Spot-welded joints have been widely used in car industry. Recently, some spot-welded joints are replaced by laser-weld joints and such applications are increasing. Laser-welded joints are superior to spot-weld joints in production speed, accuracy of the product and production of light-weight structure.
In this paper, both the static strength and fatigue strength of laser-welded joints are compared to those of spot-welded joints experimently and analytically.
Four groups of laser-welded specimens are tested. Each group differs in number of plates to be welded, two or three, and thickness of the plates ranging from 0.7 mm to 1.4 mm. In each group, the four welding conditions which are the output power of a laser beam, speed of a laser gun, the location of a focus, and the gap between the plates are considered and a total of 36 specimens are tested in each group.
The influence of change in welding conditions on the static strength are investigated from the tensile test results. The trends of influence are different group by group. The equation to predict the static strength for each group can be constructed from the above influence factors.
The maximum load - fatigue life curves are obtained from the fatigue test for both spot-welded joints and the laser-welded joints. Laser-welded joints are superior to spot-weld joints in fatigue strength also. From the finite element solution, the maximum strain at the surface of the laser-welded specimen is lower than that of the spot-welded specimen. We found that the fatigue strength is inversely proportional to the maximum strain at the surface of the specimen during the load cycle.
It is concluded from the above analysis that laser-welded joints are superior to spot-weld joints in the static strength and the fatigue strength also.
