These studies were conducted to evaluate the effects of feeding method and level of functional fiber on feed intake, milk production, and composition of milk in lactating dairy cows. In a preliminary field survey (70 dairy farms; n = 3,652), investigation was conducted to estimate the effect of feeding method on lactating performance, metabolic status, and reproduction in lactating dairy cows. In a first study (Chapter I), lactating Holstein dairy cows (n = 454) were used to determine the effect of feeding method (separate vs. TMR) on intake of nutrient, milk production, and composition of milk. Cows were randomly allotted into based on days in milk (Period 1 : on 20 - 150 DIM; Period 2 : on 151 - 305 DIM), lactation number, and 4.0% FCM production, and rearranged by feeding method (separate, n = 134 versus TMR, n = 320). In separate feeding system, cows were fed concentrate thrice daily in stalls for individual feeding and roughage free choice. Data on intake of nutrients (DM, NEL, CP, and NDF), milk yield, milk composition, somatic cell and bacterial count, FCM, and FPCM were analyzed. All parameters analyzed by t-test of general linear model (GLM) procedure. In Chapter 2, the trial was studied on the voluntary feed intake and milk production responses of Holstein cows to the TMR by the addition of concentrate (CP 21 % and NEL 1.84 Mcal/kg of DM), depending upon milk production. Treatment divided into TO and TD and defined as Period 1 (on 20 to 150 DIM) and Period 2 (on 151 to 305 DIM), respectively. Diets was formulated and balanced to meet nutrient requirements. The amount of the additional concentrate were 0.5 ㎏ per cow per feeding (1 ㎏/d), daily based on every 5 ㎏ increased MY. The CNCPS model was expanded to predict DM and fed amount of each nutrients. Predicted energy balance was also calculated from DM intake, milk yield and composition. Data collection started May, 1999 and ended August, 2000. Data were analyzed by t-test of GLM procedure. Twenty-six Holstein cows were allotted by a 2 X 2 factorial arrangement of treatments to compare the effect of feeding method (separate vs. TMR) or functional fiber level (16 and 19 % with NDFf) in Chapter III. The content of NDFf was intended to meet practically wide used in Korean dairy farms. Experimental diets designed to meet nutrient requirements for a 600 ㎏ cow according to production of 4 % FCM. The NRC and CNCPS model was expanded to predict individual DMI and/or NDFf. The intake of nutrients, milk composition, FCM, and FPCM was analyzed. Source of variation included feeding method, level of NDFf, and interaction of feeding method X NDFf level. Data were determined using GLM procedures of SAS and analyzed by Duncan's multiple range test. The results of these studies are summarized as follows. Chapter I. Effects of Feeding Methods on the Intake of Nutrient and Milk Production and Composition in Lactating Dairy Cows 1. Mean daily intake of DM and NEL were higher (P<0.01) for cows fed TMR by 2.83 ㎏ and 5.66 Mcal/d in Period 1 and 2.61 ㎏ and 4.82 Mcal/d in Period 2, respectively, compared to cows fed separately. The intake of CP for cows fed either separately or TMR were 3.88 vs. 4.28 ㎏/d (P<0.01) in Period 1 and 3.60 vs. 3.91 ㎏/d (P<0.01) in Period 2, respectively. Although there was no differentce in intake of NDF between treatments in Period 2, intake of NDF of cows fed TMR was higher by 1.82 ㎏/d than cows fed separately in Period 1 (P<0.05). Differences of average daily intake were higher for DM and NEL in primiparous cows than multiparous cows between treatments during a lactation cycle. 2. Milk yield was greater (P<0.01) for cows fed TMR than for cows fed separate feeding by 12.0% unit/d in Period 1 (P<0.01) but there was no statistical difference in Period 2. Yields of milk fat, milk protein, and SNF were greater (P<0.01) for cows fed TMR than for cows fed separately in Period 1. But no differences between treatment were observed for these parameters in Period 2. 3. Percentages of milk fat, milk protein, and SNF were also higher (P<0.01) for cows fed TMR than for cows fed separately in Period 1 except percent of milk fat and milk protein (P<0.01) in Period 2. 4. 4 % FCM and FPCM in Period 1 were higher (P<0.01) for cows fed TMR compared to cows fed separately. However, it did not differed between treatments in Period 2. 5. Concentrations of milk urea nitrogen observed no difference between treatments and it was maintained the normal level, ranging from 15.57 to 18.48 mg/dl milk in all treatments. 6. Somatic cell counts was significantly lower (P<0.01) for cows fed TMR in Period 1 and Period 2 compared to cows fed separately. Therefore, this study suggests that well balanced TMR improved more lactation performance especially in early lactation. Chapter II. Effects of Concentrate Addition on Nutrient Intake and Lactational Performance in TMR Feeding by Dairy Cow 7. DMI for cows fed TD increased by 2.2 ㎏/d (P<0.01) in Period 1 and 1.9 ㎏/d (P<0.01) in Period 2, respectively, compared to cows fed TO. NEL intake was also increased (P<0.01) for cows fed TD by 4.35 and 2.24 Mcal/d in Period 1 and 2, respectively (P<0.01). The intake of CP was slightly higher (P<0.01) for cows fed TD (4.53 and 4.15 ㎏/d) than fed TO (4.11 and 3.73 ㎏/d) in Period 1 and 2. On 20 to 150 DIM, however, intake of NDF was not significantly affected between treatments, but cows fed TD increased in Period 2 (P<0.05). 8. Mean daily milk production for cows fed TD was significantly increased (P<0.05) by 4.44 ㎏/d compared to cows fed TO in Period 1, but did not differed in Period 2. Cows fed TD was higher during one lactation period, ranged from 2.81 to 6.23 ㎏/d. 9. The percentage of milk fat was not different between treatments, but milk fat yield for cows fed TD was higher (P<0.01) than for cows fed TO in Period 1 and 2. 4 % FCM in Period 1 (P<0.01) and in Period 2 (P<0.05) was also higher for cows fed TD. FCM for cows fed TD was greater by 4.36 in Period 1 and 3.70㎏/d in Period 2. 10. The content and yield of milk protein were not different between treatments during one lactation cycle except protein percent for cows fed TD (P<0.05) in Period 1. Although MUN concentrations were not different between treatments, cows fed TO (17.23 and 17.56 mg/dl) were slightly higher than cows fed TD (16.94 and 17.03 mg/dl) in all Period. 11. FPCM of cows fed TD was increased (P<0.01) by 4.32㎏/d in Period 1, but it was not different between treatments in Period 2. 12. Percent and yield of SNF were not different between neither TO nor TD at all lactation phase. Cows fed TD was lower (P<0.01) in SCC by 6.47 X 104/㎖ in Period 1 and 11.40 X 104/㎖ in Period 2, respectively. 13. Data on intakes of DM, NEL, CP, and NDF in primiparous cows were almost similar pattern, but this tendency was not consistent in multiparous cows. When TD was fed, primiparous cows affected more to increase lactational performance compared to multiparous cows. The result of this study, therefore, suggest that classification of individual cows into potential group based on early lactation performance can be serve as a useful tool for TMR feeding strategy later in lactation. Chapter III. Effects of Feeding Method and Level of Functional Fiber on Nutrient Intake and Milk Yield and Composition in Early Lactation Cow 14. Mean DMI from d 10 to 130 postpartum for cows fed TMR was improved by 8.3 % unit compared to cows fed separately. DMI was affected by NDFf level on 10 DIM and by feeding method on 70 DIM (P<0.05), respectively. There was significant difference in NEL intake by feeding method on 70 and 100 DIM. 15. Although CP intake was not significantly affected either by feeding method or functional fiber level in diets except by FL on 10 DIM, NDF intake was significantly affected by both feeding method and NDFf level. 16. Milk yield tended to be higher in LF treatments and significantly affected (P<0.01) on 10 DIM. However, FM did not show any statistically difference in milk yield during this lactation period. 17. Low NDFf affected MF content on 70 and 100 DIM (P<0.05) and tended to affect on 10 (P<0.09) and 130 (P<0.08) DIM. However, no difference was observed in milk fat composition by FM. In Separate treatment, MF of LF was lower than HF at 100 and 130 DIM (P0.05). FCM also appeared similar response with MF test. 18. Although milk protein concentration was not influenced by neither feeding method nor NDFf level in the diet during all sampling period, yield of milk protein was affected on 10 DIM (P<0.05). 19. SNF content were affected by FL on 40 DIM (P<0.05) and on 100 DIM (P<0.01). It also tended to be affected on 130 DIM (P=0.08). The result demonstrated that feed intake was increased by TMR feeding and MY and MF were appeared to be similar response to DMI. LF decreased MF in separate feeding but not in TMR. This result can partly suggest that minimun level of functional fiber requirement can be differenciated when TMR feeding system is used. Further study is required to determine the relationship of functional fiber and other factors which can affect ruminal pH.
Chapter II.
