This thesis places the focus on the communication competence in TV-mediated environment, specifically on the solution of the problem of how the communication competence of the TV cast is evaluated by audience and viewers. Thus, this thesis analyses diverse factors centering around nonverbal communication with two reasons. First, the primary feature of TV is to transform our reality into a sensual world through visual code and the message communicated involves multiple factors of nonverbal communication. Second, the visual code of TV makes much greater appeal, through nonverbal visual communication rather than verbal aural one, to audience or viewers. For the comparison of several people's communication competence under the equal environment, I make the panelists of TV forum a subject of my analysis. Respondents are divided into two groups; audience group participating in a live show and viewers watching a filmed show. On this basis, this thesis explores several problems: first, a comprehensive discussion about the communication competence, second, an examination on nonverbal communicative factors of the communication competence, that is, on how the importance of nonverbal communication is grasped in evaluating the communication competence, and third, an understanding of TV-mediated communication competence different from face-to-face one. Specific findings of this thesis are as follows: 1. Constituents and characteristics of the communication competence Evaluating any communication competence rests on seven constitutive elements; image, charisma, situational appropriateness, strategic management, vocal management, body language, and impression management. What is noted is the correlation between the seven constituents and the jobs of panelists. Before the forum, both the panelists engaging in professions and the professional entertainers, with highly-appraised charisma and highly-appraised image respectively, give a favorable impression to the respondents. This image evaluation, however, changes with the lapse of time, which is especially conspicuous in the audience group occupying the same physical space. While audience's evaluation gets more and more positive with the lapse of time, viewers' evaluation partly changes on a small scale, with their first impression changed less. 2. Differences between audience's and viewers' responses to the evaluation on the factors of communication competence Examination of the differences in evaluating the communication competence shows that audience group makes much of situational appropriateness and body language, and viewers strategic management, meaning the evaluation of face-to-face communication competence is not always in accord with that of TV-mediated one. In addition, viewers make sure that, by placing high value on the communication competence of those who are making many appearances on TV, there is close correlation between high frequency in appearance on TV and evaluation on TV-mediated communication competence. 3. Correlation between the communication competence and its constituents Evaluation of the communication competence has positive correlation with the seven constituents, demonstrating the evaluation of the constituents is directly proportional to the communication competence. At first, situational appropriateness of the seven constituents seems to have the closest correlation with communication competence, but my analysis of the correlation between the seven constituents shows image and impression management are more directly connected with the communication competence. 4. Determinatives of communication competence While the respondents, before the forum, feel that the communication competence depends on charisma and sociability, after the evaluation on the forum, they change their mind to think that actual determinatives are propriety, persuasive power, and other nonverbal factors. Nonverbal factors, on the whole, play a quite critical role in evaluating the communication competence. Respondents show wide differences, before and after the forum, in evaluating the panelists with superior competence. What is remarkable is that, after the forum, the evaluation of panelists with superior competence coincides with that of those whom they like. 5. Determinatives of the communication competence in the TV-mediated environment Some differences between viewers and audience group are found in determining communication competence; viewers make much of situational appropriateness and strategic management, and audience group situational appropriateness and image. In addition, two groups disagree with each other in evaluating the panelists with superior competence, indicating they also disagree in determining and evaluating the panelists' communication competence. The two groups, specifically, show a great difference in evaluating on those whom they like, which proves that, in evaluating panelists' communication competence, there is a difference between face-to-face environment and TV-mediated one.
