This study is designed to make a comparative investigation of Cheollik in China and Korea with a view to utilizing the clothes worn by a variety of classes in the Goryeo Dynasty and the Chosun Dynasty, inquiring into changes and design factors, etc. Cheolik is no longer in use, but it was widely used in the two dynasties and used by various classes. Its form is different from other attire. And it has folds in Hasang with the upper part linked with the lower part. It is assumed that Cheollik originated in Mongolian Byeokjeokporyu. The word telig in Mongolian was changed into Cheopli in the course of transliterating the word into Chinese letters, while the term was changed into tyeonlic in Korea. Several words like Cheolik, Taesupo, and Chincheoppo or what not were adopted to describe the clothes, which was called Tyeonlic, Tyeollic, Cheollik, and Cheonnik etc in Korea. There were Cheopri, Cheonnic, and Cheollik in Chinese letters. The word seems to have been subjected to transliteration. Chinese Cheolik is a kind of national attire, which used to be worn by the Mongolian race riding horses and hunting animals because of its practical reason of simplicity. Its ornaments such as folds and added lines on the waist were subjected to more ramification. In the Ming Dynasty, the clothes came in various shape and were worn by various kinds of classes. The Ching Dynasty saw the clothes worn by kings and his subjects as a kind of ceremonial dress. The period when we Koreans first used Cheollik turns out to be the Goyeo Dynasty. The clothes were first adopted by kings and his courtiers, which was later used by ordinary people as ordinary attire. The clothes were worn as undergarment for kings and sadabu, high-ranking officials, and for soldiers in the Chosun Dynasty, which were later worn by all walks of life. The clothes the Chosun Dynasty are to be seen among excavated goods. The excavations show that the line linking the lower part with the upper part was moving upward with the lapse of time, and that the length of the upper part got shorter with shortened side line in the late Chosun Dynasty. Second, Durisome came into fashion. Third, the collar went through changes not in width but in form. The researcher has failed to witness wooden double collars appearing in the late Goyeo Dynasty and the early Chosun Dynasty. The head of the collar was in the shape of a curve with its width shorted, and later the clothes were in the shape of a round collar. Fourth, the location and methods of adjustment were subjected to changes from two couples of narrow and short coat strings in the upper and lower part to a couple of coat string on the right and left, which was due to a decrease in side lines. The clothes were made of silk fabrics, cotton fabrics, and ramie fabrics etc. and its design was sometimes in the shape of fingerprints. The clothes had flower design as well as cloud design. Ornament beauty can be seen from knot buttons, coat strings, and the inside patch lining of coat strings with practical use. This study is designed to present Cheollik applied to daily attire or Korean fashion attire through an examination of its folds and sleeve collars and to present its possibilities for pregnant-women dress, old people's attire, infant clothes and night clothes.
