My study assesses the accomplishment of '80 Divided Peninsula Novel and discusses its various aspects and characteristics, which have been unjustly neglected until recent years. Division of Korean Peninsula and Korean War have made an enormous effect on the development of Korean modern novels, for the events have greatly influenced the very individual lives of the people. They produce such the unique form of novels as a war novel (by the war generation), a growing-up novel (by the young generation of the war), a novel of their indirect effects (by the post-war generation). These novels attempt to delve into what causes the war, how the war and its consequent division of the peninsula still govern our own ways of life, how we can overcome such the problems, and so on. The '80s is the time when we, facing with the fluctuating political situations, eagerly wanted to change the social structure, which forced us to reflect the deep-rooted contradictions and absurdity in the contemporary society and to find the way-out from them. I find the original motive for these desire for social change in the Kwang-ju Democratic Struggle of May, 1980. The Struggle is the symbolic event to break free of the accumulated social contradictions. The '80s novelists took the event as a stepping stone for the further looking at the Korean war and the division. They accepted the division as the origin of the contemporary social problems and tried to overcome them through the literature. With many careful and various analyses of these issues, I re-examine how the post-war writers thought about the problems and where they attempted to find the way-out from them through the divided peninsula novels by the writers. The '80s, the time when produced many writers, was the hottest time for the passion and hope for the renovation and unification of our society since the liberation of Korea from Japan. At the time, the writers of the national literature and laborer literature tend to depend or their literature on the contemporary socio-scientific understanding. The post-war writers did not follow the tendency but rather approached the problem of Korean War and the division as the main source of the social contradictions. They attempted to overcome the superficial and dogmatic view of the established literature and to get the literary objectivity in the various manners, though they still had some limits in projecting the reunification as the event of far-off ideal future. The accomplishment of '80s novel has not been upheld to the full development in '90s, for there lacked the perceptual turn to tip the previous novels. Moreover, the downfall of the socialist theory directly affected their perceptions of the novels. Since the division have still affected our life in the various forms, however, it seems necessary to diversify the manners of novels through which we amplify and deepen our understanding of them. For these reasons we should escape the limited approaches to the subjects and themes in the novels. The novels can help somewhat us to get the unity of our society, because we can get the improving senses for how we could escape from the superficial senses of family experiences, with particular attention to the problems in the novels such as the long term POWs and the escapers from North Korea. In addition, through the novels we could prepare for the literature after unification: we need a more careful study them that reflect the ills and conflicts that may happen after unification. The characteristics and accomplishment of the '80s divided peninsula novels have been brightly reflected by post-war writers. Our division, the last inheritance of the cold war, is the most important social and historial problem we have. By relying internally on humanity, the novel reflects the main social perception on how we could overcome the external division, the historical disruption and wound mainly: the novels originally came from these external and internal consciousness of the division and the will to overcome it aggressively. In the finalanalysis, we should re-investigate the accomplishment as well as its intrinsic limits of the novels.
