The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of number representation activities on young children's problem-solving ability in mathematics. The Following research questions were formulated : 1. Will number representation activities improve children's mathematical story-problem solving ability? 2. Will number representation activities improve children's mathematical picture-problem solving ability? The subjects of this study were 50 children in a kindergarten in Il San, Kyoung Ki province. They were divided into an experimental group and a comparative group with 25 children in each. There were no statistically significant differences in story-problem solving ability and picture-problem solving ability between the two groups. The experimental group did number representation activities two or three times a week, in 30-minute sessions, for six weeks. The class was divided into 4 groups. There were 6 to 7 children in each group. The comparative group experienced mathematical play using materials in the mathematics area. In order to find out the effects of the treatment, a pretest and a posttest were given to each of the children and the data obtained in this study was analyzed by t-test between the experimental and comparison groups using SPSS program. The results of this study were as follows : 1. The experimental group which did number representation activities showed a greater improvement in mathematical story-problem solving ability than the comparison group. 2. The experimental group which did number representation activities showed a greater improvement in mathematical picture-problem solving ability than the comparison group. These results show that number representation activities have a more positive effect on young children's mathematical story-problem solving ability and mathematical picture-problem solving ability.
