As an architect, Le Corbusier searched for ideal society and architectural models through his life. Especially, WW II turned him to recognize potential problems of social organization, responsibility, and modernity, and after the war he put his efforts to solve and reform the problems in society through architecture. In addition to that, with his maturity, his architectural vocabulary became enriched. The purpose of this study is to understand his architecture in a comprehensive perspective, analyzing spatial characteristics of his late works from 1945 to 1965. There are 17 works analyzed for the spatial characteristics of his late works, among 32 ones built during the period. The 17 works are public buildings: Usine Duval, Unite d'Habitation in Marseille, Chapelle Notre Dame du Haut, Musee Ahmedabad, Haute Cour in Chandigarh, Mill Owners' Association Building, Chandigarh Secretariat, Club Nautique in Chandigarh, Couvent Sainte Marie de la Tourette, Cite Universitaire Maison du Bresil, Chandigarh Assemblee, Maison de la Culture, Musee d'Art Occidental Tokyo, Chandigarh Ecole d'Art, Ecluse de Kembs Niffer, Carpenter Visual Arts Center, and Center Le Corbusier. In 1918, Le Corbusier published his 4 architectural aesthetics of mass, surface, plan, and regulating lines; however, he excluded 'space' in them that his concept of architecture was more emphasis on 'mass' rather than 'space'. Nevertheless, his concept of architecture went through certain changes, and it was 1945 when he used the word 'space' for the first time in his essay, 'L;Espace Indicible'. Since then, his works showed apparent changes in configuring spatial composition. The elements of space were walls, columns, ceilings, and floors; but this study, analyzing spatial characteristics of his late works, especially focused more on walls as he expressed the essence of his feelings in the phrase of 'the ineffable space', saying that the ineffable space created after walls broken out. In this study, there are the spatial vocabulary and the wall vocabulary used as analyzing tools to reveal the spatial characteristics of his late works. The vocabulary results from the spatial analysis on 4 houses and 9 public buildings in his early works and 17 public buildings in his late works. Le Corbusier continuously used them in all of his works. The spatial vocabulary is extention, protrusion, subtraction, penetration, void, courts, superimposition, and double-height space; and the wall vocabulary, segmentation, articulation, concavity, removed corners, modificated corners, pilotis, ribbon windows, glass wall, and brise soleil. Especially, he used the protrusion in two different ways, horizontally and vertically. Void, double-height space and protrusion were the spatial vocabulary which characterized Le Corbusier's late works the best. The elements for the space of void were pilotis and a roof in most of his late works; but in a few works, he used walls and a roof or a roof over another roof instead of pilotis. In the approaching space, Le Corbusier used the void to make the spatial experience rich in most of his works. Moreover, at the end of his late works, he used the void as a plastic spatial element as he changed the roof height gradually increasing in the space of the void. On the other hand, he used the void as a boundary without walls between the interior space and the exterior space while making the space continuous between them. He also used the double-height space to let the space continuous vertically between different levels, while separating each area in a building. The double-height space became more complicated as reaching his end of late works. For an example, he used multiple double-height space in Musee d'Art Occidental Tokyo, 1957. The whole exhibition room was the double-height space of the 2nd and the 3rd floors, which enclosed another double-height space of the main hall, continuing the space vertically between 1st, 2nd, and 3rd floors, in the middle of the art museum building. And then, Le Corbusier made the walls segmented and corners removed between the two double space to make the space continue horizontally. Using the 3rd floor, he made another spatial changes using ceiling heights in the double-height space of the exhibition room. There are two kinds of protrusion. One is horizontal protrusion and the other, vertical protrusion. He used the horizontal protrusion to continue the space between rooms in a building, while using the vertical protrusion to maximize the effect of light in the space through the segmentation of walls on the top of it. He also used the space of subtraction for the approaching area in order to separate rooms in a building without using walls; hence, he used it with other spatial vocabulary like a court or the void to enrich the spatial experience. The space of gradual extention showed a different character from the rest of the spatial vocabulary since he didn't use it for the continuation of the space in a building. Unlike the other vocabulary, he used it to create a spatial change within the space on its own. Like most of the vocabulary, the court, as the exterior space within the area of a building, also separated rooms without walls in the building. Planning the circulation to reach the court after walking through a dark space or inside a building, Le Corbusier used it as an element to experience the spatial changes in the building. Unlike all of the above vocabulary, he didn't use penetration or superimposition much. In his early works, Le Corbusier used superimposition few times for the core area; and then, at the end of his late works period, he used it again once more but for the main space. Last, regarding the wall vocabulary, he used the segmentation the most. In his early works, it was used to make rooms full with the sun-light in the building; however, in his late works he used it to control the sun-light in the space. Like the segmentation, he also used brise soleil to control the sun-light; yet, later he used it to shape the form of space. In the building, the segmentation and removed corners let the space continued while modificated corners set the spatial hierarchy. In the conclusion, in his late works Le Corbusier used these spatial vocabulary to create plastic spatial composition and to continue the space in the building without using walls while keeping areas separated; hence, he employed the wall vocabulary to use the light to create 'the ineffable space' within the space which he made with the spatial vocabulary.
