The purpose of this study was to examine the expanded meaning of 'genuineness' in Carl Rogers' person-centered counseling. Rogers hypothesized that, if the counselor could provide three definable conditions in his/her relationship with the client and if the client could perceive to some degree the presence of these conditions, then therapeutic movement would ensue. These three conditions were the counselor's genuineness or congruence, unconditional positive regard, and a sensitively accurate empathic understanding. He suggested that genuineness or congruence was the most basic of the three conditions. This study takes three perspectives to explore: (1) a counselor, (2) a client, and (3) process of counseling. Counselor's genuineness. Genuineness in the counselor includes counselor's (1) self-understanding, (2) attitude toward a client, and (3) performing counselor's role. First, counselor's self-understanding means that he/she comprehends his/her philosophical background and awares the flow of experience within himself/herself moment-to-moment in the counseling sessions. He accepts himself as he is and exists as he is. Second, genuineness in counselor's attitudes means that he is transparent and congruent in the relationship with his client. Genuineness, which is communicated to and perceived by his/her client, affects success in counseling. Third, counselor's roles in the person-centered approach include that he/she perceives client's experiences within the internal frame of reference of his client and he becomes his client's genuine altered ego. However, counselor's role is not passive and unintentioned. Genuineness in the counselor leads to client's genuineness. Client's genuineness. Client's genuineness includes (1) openness to experiences, (2) trust in his/her organism, and (3) acceptance of himself/ herself. To be that self which one truly is means that he/she comes to accept and to embrace his denied aspects of himself. He/she lives every moment a new life and is open to every aspect of his/her experiences, which means a genuine life. The client comes to know that he/she has lived trying to meet others' expectations and to realize that he/she was not his/her real self. Once experienced in an accepting climate, he/she gradually achieves more unity and integration between the person he/she organismically is and the self he/she perceives himself/herself as being. He/she is away from what he/she is not and comes to trust and to accept what he/she is. Genuineness in process of counseling. Genuineness is found in the relationship between the therapist and client through the process of counseling. When the counselor is genuine and congruent during the session, the client experiences the counseling therapeutically. Counselor's genuineness has effect on the genuineness in process of counseling. As the client experiences unconditional positive regard by the counselor, he/she comes to accepts himself. Therapist's openness and transparency facilitate the client's genuineness. When the relationship is not genuine, it is not easy to use any counseling techniques effectively. Therapeutic relationship is a genuine relationship functioning mutually. As conclusion, genuineness exists in counselor's attitude, characteristics of the client's change, and therapeutic relationship. Counselor's genuineness facilitates client's genuineness, which is the goal of counseling, and therapeutic process. Rogers' phenomenological understanding is based on trust in one's organism and actualizing tendency, and it makes possible for the counselor to accept one's client unconditionally. Genuineness is not the fixed concept, but it is the process.
