(A) study on the directions for the development of the formula feed industry in Korea : in comparison with the formula feed industry in Japan원문보기

The purpose of this study is to compare the formula feed industry in Korea with that in Japan and propose ways to solve the problems that the Korean formula feed industry faces. Since the formula feed industry is dependent on the livestock industry, it is not too much to say that the former's success or failure is contingent on the development of the latter. The livestock industry, in turn, is dependent on people's dietary habits. Since the consumption of meat increases each year as people's standard of living rises, the local livestock market is expected to continually expand. Korea's formula feed industry in Korea had showed an impressive growth of over 10% on the average each year from the 1960's to the 1980's, by virtue of the rapid growth of the country's economy during this period. Unfortunately, in 1997, Korea's IMF- controlled economy and the open market (due to a WTO Agreement) made the industry's growth rate sluggish, or even negative. Japan's experience is no different. The opening of its domestic livestock in the 1990's and the subsequent surge of imported meat products has led to a decrease in the number of livestock-breeding farms in the country, and consequently, to the stagnancy of its formula feed industry since this time. The livestock industries of Korea and Japan both being labor-intensive, have no price advantages over such world's best producers and suppliers as those in the United States, Australia and Argentina. In the long run, therefore, the number of livestock-breeding farms, which are the primary markets of the formula feed industry, in the two countries would dwindle to an optimal level. There would be various ways to protect and promote the domestic livestock industry, including the improvement of the quality of meat products and changes in consumers perceptions of such quality. This study focuses on restructuring of Korea's formula feed industry so as to strengthen its price competitiveness, similarly as Japan's attempts towards the same industry's structural renovation. Some measures to restructure the industry are given below. First, the current production capacity of the local formula feed industry exceeds market demands. It is thus necessary to keep the local industry's production capacity at an optimal level by means of company mergers and acquisitions. Second, the share of raw materials in the manufacturing cost of formula feeds in Korea is relatively small compared to that in Japan and Europe, and should increased. Third, since most of the formula feeds are produced in great volume, manufacturers should bear a significant part of the logistics costs. Bulk- type transportation or OEM- type production through neighboring plants may help curtail logistics costs. Fourth, Korea's established network of local agents should be transformed into one providing livestock-breeding farms with management consultations. Fifth, 10 or 20 local agents should be consolidated into a single agent that deals with diverse products of various manufacturers so that livestock-breeding farmers, who are the major consumers of formula feeds, could choose products directly and conveniently. The consolidation of local agents will also help reduce the commodity's total distribution cost. In short, Korea's formula feed industry should increase its international competitiveness by improving of its structural weaknesses.
