As studied in this thesis, variation forms contain many variable elements such as melody, rhythm, harmony, tempo, range and dynamics. In the method of composition, J.Brahms constantly pursued the formal beauty and the lyrical beauty of romantic spirit. The characteristic features appeared in this work are as follows; Keys are not changed nearly. Only the 5th, the 6th, the 10th, the 13th variations among 27 variations changed to the tonic minor, and the 21st variation to the parallel minor key. All variations except the 19th, the 23rd and the 24th ones. Though those exceptional variations are in 12/8 time, they could be counted as 4/4 time. Seventh, diminished and augmented chords are utilized along with classical hamonies. Various rhythms appeared in the variations, though a certain rhythmic motive is used constantly in one variation. Fast tempo is generally accepted. Whole work could be divided into some groups. The first group from theme to the 3rd variations has a moderato tempo. The second group from the 4th to the 10th variations, is considered fast, the slow third group consists of 11th to the 13th variations. The fourth group from the 14th to the 25th variations, is considered fast, and the final fugue has moderato independent tempo. So this grouping is compared with sonata movement. The 1st, the 2nd, the 3rd, the 4th groups and fugue may come under the introduction in moderato tempo, the fast first movement, the slow second movement, the fast third movement and the finale. Melodies are treated contrapuntally and they are repeated through broken chords and parallel motions. Though there is deep connection between theme and variations, this work seems to emphasize variable elements.
