The purpose of this study was to examin the programs and facilities of music therapy of social welfare center, the general overview of music therapy service, and problems the therapists face, thus contribute a better music therapy program To obtain the subjects for this study, telephone survey was made on approximately 79 welfare centers, where the phone numbers were verified, out of 348 welfare centers and mail survey was done on 11 welfare centers in Seoul, 6 welfare centers in the district areas and 30 other welfare centers where the telephone survey did not take place. The questionnaires were sent for a month in May and total of 15 survey questionnaires were collected back from June to July. The major findings of the study on the 15 welfare centers in Seoul and district areas are as follows. 1. When music therapy facilities were analyzed, there were only 5 welfare centers with a room that is just for music therapy and the other center share the room with other programs as well as music therapy, and there was no facility with soundproof system. The welfare center with most music instruments had 40 different kinds of instruments, and there were 3 welfare centers with less than 10 indicating the deviation of instrument across the facilities. For the work experience variable, 5 subject had less than 6 months of music therapy work experience. This was the most frequently observes response. There was only one subject who has worked for more than 30 months. This is probably due to the late introduction of the music therapy in welfare centers. 2. Currently most clients of the music therapy are mentally retarded people and development disordered people from 11 welfare centers. Most children suffer from development disorder, most adults suffer from schizophrenia and most elderly people suffer from dementia. There were 9 welfare centers with 2 sessions of music therapy per week and in case of group therapy, most welfare centers had a 40-minute session per week. An individual session was done for 30 minutes. As for the reasons of getting music therapy, 5 clients answered "because of recommendation from the welfare center" and 4 answered "because the guardians wanted them to." 3. When looking at the personal background of the therapists, there were 14 female therapists out of 15 welfare centers and most were in their 30s. Most majored in music-related course and all the music therapists said that they could play the piano and the keyboard the best. During the program, most therapists used instruments they can play the best. On the other hand, there were only 2 welfare centers where every session is recorded and analyzed. There were only 4 welfare centers where the sessions are recorded and analyzed when it is needed. This indicates a shortage of equipments supports in the welfare centers. 4. When looking into the problems and things to improve, there were many answers saying that the facility of the music therapy was unsatisfactory and the reason for this unsatisfaction was lack of instruments, the most answers from 11 welfare centers. Also the biggest problems were low wage, insufficient equipments, insufficient knowledge of music therapy, and overworking hours. As a conclusion, professionals associated with the music therapy should put plenty of effort and interest so that the music therapy can be used as a useful therapy method to treat various diseases and stress.
