In this study, to understand the effects of surface roughness of brake disc on its friction and wear behavior, experiments of the surface roughness effects on the initial friction coefficient were conducted by changing the parameters of surface roughness, applied loads and the environmental temperature. The results are as follows; 1. The friction coefficient is a little affected by the magnitude of applied loads, and rough surface exhibited nearly constant coefficient without fractured surfaces as the applied load increases. However, smooth surfaces showed increase in initial friction coefficient and radical fractured surfaces with the increase in applied load. 2. The coefficient of friction on the rough surface exhibited the largest value and the medium roughness surface showed the lowest value under the testing conditions of applied load of 15ON, sliding speed of 1.62m/min, temperature of 150℃. 3. The friction coefficient of rough surfaces increased from 50℃ up to 150℃ . and then decreased at 250℃. However, the medium and smooth surfaces showed relatively stable coefficients at the testing temperature regime. 4. The initial friction coefficient was shown to be affected by surface roughness rather than applied load and environmental temperature. Thus, the initial friction coefficient between brake disc and pad has a close relationship with the disc surface roughness.
