The growth characteristic of Laminaria japonica as well as physico-chemical environments were investigated at a cultivation ground on the coast of Hunbokdong, Jindo, where seaweed cultivating industry is active. For the study, young sporophytes grown in a nursery were transplanted at various density and water depth by utilizing suspending rope method, and field surveys on them were conducted a monthly from December, 1999 to July, 2000. There were observed water temperature (6.0~21.0℃), salinity (43.0~34.6‰), dissolved oxygen (7.8mg/ℓ ~9.8mg/ℓ), pH (8.0~8.3) and transparency (1.0~3.0m). Also cultivation ground was formed in the bottom sediment with 40~60% of sand and the depth reached approximately 5~11m below the mean sea level. Current velocity was 40~80cm/sec at sunrise and 30~50cm/sec at sunset. Concentrations of suspended solids, chemical oxygen demand, total inorganic nitrogen, and phosphate were 6.8~30mg/ℓ, 0.56~2.00mg/ℓ, 0.085~0.244mg/ℓ and 0.003~0.012mg/ℓ, respectively. Production of L. japonica was affected by cultivation depth and density. High-quality of dry L. japonica was produced by keeping the depth around 60cm untill March when water temperature was lower than 10℃, whereas by raising the depth to surface after that time, by adding buoys to the main rope at 2.5m interval made. Maximum production yielded when young blades were attached at 60cm interval and the number of young blades per knot was adjusted between six and eight. Average frond length was 10cm in December 1999. Frond width, thickness and wet weight showed similar to seasonal trend of length, and reached their maxima in May or June, but frond length showed no more increment after May. Maxium length, width and wet weight were 419.5cm and 22.2cm and 1,300g respectively. The obesity was more than 100mg/㎠ in June, thus proving it to be appropriate time for harvesting. Reproductive sprophytes bearing sporangium sours and attrition began to occur from the late July. Laminaria showed a tendency of easily being torn apart and was weak rhyzoidal adhesion noticeably.
