This study was designed to determine the effects of l'rotaetia Orientalis(Gory et Perchlon) on the in vivo lipid metabolism and antioxidant enzyme systems. Sprague Dawlcy rats were administered with ethanol, CCI_(4), CCI_(4) and high fat diet to induce damage in the liver. In addition, Protaetia Orientalis(Gory et Perchlon) was fed to the experimental animals in the diet. The administration of ethanol resulted in increase of serum triglyceride and total cholesterol, atherogenic index, serum GOT and GPT, liver triglyceride and total cholesterol. On the other hand, those fed in combination with ethanol and Protaetia Orientalis(Gory et Perchlon) decreased those lipid component. ethanol feeding resulted in decrease of serum and liver HDL-cholesterol, and antioxidative enzymes activity, with the exception of glutathionc reductase. In contrast, those fed in combination with ethanol and Protaetia Orientalis(Gory et Perchlon) increased those parameters. The administration of CC14 resulted in the increase of serum triglyceride and total cholesterol, atherogenic index, serum GOT and GPT, liver total cholesterol. On the other hand, those fed in combination with CC14 and Protaetia Orientalis(Gory et Perchlon) decreased those parameters. The administration of CC14 resulted in decrease of serum HDL-cholesterol, HTR., liver pospholipid, catalase, total SOD, Cu, Zn-SOD, Mn-SOD, glutathione-S-trasferase activity. In contrast, those fed in combination with CCI4 and Protaetia Orientalis(Gory et Perchlon) increased those parameters. The administration of CCI4 and high fat resulted in increase of liver total cholesterol, GOT and GPT. On the other hand, those fed in combination with CC14, high fat and Protaetia Orientalis(Gory et Perchlon) decreased those parameters. The administration of CCI4 and high fat resulted in decrease of antioxidant enzymes activity, with the exception of glutathione reductase. In contrast, those fed in combination with CCI4, high fat and Protaetia Orientalis(Gory et Perchlon) increased those parameters. These results indicated that Protaetia Orientalis(Gory et Perchlon) might exert a strong hypocholesterolemic and hypolipidemic effect which may lead to the protection from liver related disease.
