The process of sequencing batch reactor(SBR) with activated carbon has been studied in this research. Three different kinds of granular activated carbon(namely, PK1-3, GAC 1240, and ROW 0.8 SUPRA) have been tested to clarify the effect on removing organic materials in wastewater which may contain heavy metals or refractory chemicals. By measuring BOD5, the ability of biological degradation in SBR were confirmed. The optimal concentration of activated carbon was determined as 500mg/L from the results of decolorization experiments. The decrease of soluble chemical oxygen demand(SCOD) in SBR was examined with considering adsorption isotherm to calculate the adsorbed loadings and the apparent loadings. The process of SBR with the activated carbon increased 16% in treatment efficiency compared to the process of SBR alone. The amount of adsorbed SCOD was calculated by using Freundlich isotherm which coefficients were determined in this research. We have observed a synergistic effect on the treatment process when the activated carbon was added into the process. The added activated carbon decreased the inhibition effect from heavy metals or refractory chemicals contained in the wastewater. As inhibitors, we chose Pb, Cd, Cr, and phenol. When 500mg/L activated carbon(PK1-3) was added into the wastewaters containing 30mg/L inhibitors(Pb, Cd, Cr, and phenol), the treatment efficiency was increased 15.2%, 23.7%, 21.5%, and 14.9%, respectively.
